Nait 5 / Nap 175 functionality question.

Chaps,

Can someone please tell me if I can use a Nait 5 / Nap 175 in the following two ways:

In Stereo - CD player into the Nait 5 for pre-amp work. Pre-out from nait to Nap 175 to power front stereo pair of speakers
(I assume this is fairly straightforward)

In AV - DVD player to my AV amp (Marantz 4300).
Front stereo speaker pre-outs from AV amp via pre-amp section on Nait 5, then onto Nap 175 to power front stereo speakers
Front centre channel pre-out from AV amp directly to centre channel on Nap 175.
Rear stereo pre-outs from AV amp to Nait 5 power amp section, then onto rear stereo speakers.

I know that this is not exactly the way a 175 was envisioned to be used, but it would mean 3 matching amps for the front channels, whilst my nait power amp could power the rears. Would certainly save me a huge amount of cash when the other option is to add a Nap 150 etc etc.

Hey, this is a bit scary, 42 views but no one knows the answer.

Surely one of the moderators must know?

It should be possible in theory. One point to remember though is that when using the Nait 5 as a pre-amp you need to have a separate power supply such as a Flatcap or Hi-Cap or else use a power amp which can supply the juice. Unfortunately the NAPV175 cannot supply power to a pre-amp so a separate power supply would be needed. Otherwise it should work - your dealer should be able to supply the correct RCA-DIN interconnects - but I can't predict compatibility or possible earth loops.

Thanks for that, useful info.

Could the Nap150 supply power to a Nait 5 used as a pre-amp?

The Nait already has its own built in supply. Why can't this be used?

Mr Sukebe,

A NAP 150 could supply power to the Nait 5 when the Nait is used as a pre-amp.

Steve B,

when you split the Nait 5 into separate pre and power sections, the pre-amp loses it's power supply. Normally this would then be supplied either by the partnering power amplifier or a separate power supply unit like a Flatcap or Hi-Cap. In the case outlined by Mr Sukebe the power amp section of the Nait 5 will be used with the pre-amp section of the AV controller and so it would be very difficult (but perhaps not entirely impossible if you're very handy with a soldering iron to make up a custome SNAIC) to get it to supply power to the pre-amp section of the Nait. As I've said earlier the earthing implications for such an arrangement may make this impractical.
