Critiquing Eminem

Posted by: Mekon on 22 December 2003

Dr. Albert Oxford of the London Institute of Culture and Rap Studies has penned a list of objections to Eminem. Well worth a click.

quote:

6. Sexism

Women are nothing but mindless receptacles for sex in Eminem's world, as evidenced by his current hit Hot in Here where he issues these commands: "It's getting hot in here... so take off all your clothes." In the chorus a female voice responds in submission, "I'm gonna take my clothes off." A terrifying look into a misogynist fantasy.

The author deserves a job sripting Tom Baker's Little Britain intro's. His objections to LOTR are also worth a look.

Hi Mekon,
apart from the fact that he is Homophobic, sexist and seem's to incite trouble in all forms I wouldn't buy his stuff on the basis of not wishing to fund him.Or if I'm totally honest, I don't understand him. But is there really a place called , The London Instute FOR Culture and Rap Studies ?,and if there is ,isn't this a contradiction of terms ? Wink

Yeah - it's by another clone (c)rapper - you're right - Nelly. Shame she (the elephant) didn't sit on him.

Theres about 3 acts that can rap, all the rest are crap. IMHO of course.

Same with "new" RnB - what a load of old junk...

.......

Right - just read that article; so music isn't music without a horn section eh? Well, that's crap for starters. And what about "Cop Killer"? I thought that was a Bodycount track - the one that forced the "Cop Killer" album to be banned and reissued in this country with the title track replaced with "Freedom of speech (just watch what you say".

At least that PhD dude got one thing right - Eminem can't dance for sh**.

You are spot on Dom. Dr. Oxford addresses the same point.

quote:

12: The numbers don't lie

Eminem is rap's most popular artist; but a 1998 University of Chicago study proved rap is the least enjoyable form of popular music, probably due to its horn deficit. Rap scored an 8.6 on the Henderson Audiological Good Scale. By comparison, the study found that Classical music scored a 16.9, Christian Rock a 19.6, and a spectacular 22.4 for ska.

So why do rap fans pretend to enjoy it?

Which three acts should I listen to?

Personally I'd rate Bodycount/Ice T (his solo stuff is better but the cheese metal factor is fun even if the lyrics aren't always a walk in the park!), Run DMC (don't own any of their stuff but I've never heard a clunker from them) and NWA - their seminal "Straight outta Compton" should be mandatory for all people - even if they don't like (c)rap music Smile

I actually don't mind Eminem, but his mysogynistic and violent lyrics get boring very quickly. I thought 8 Mile was hilarious though - the rap 'em up scenes are class. I don't honestly recall that verse the PhD guy quoted being rapped in the movie though.

I also didn't know about the "black" characters really being white - if that's the case than something's seriously ****ed up with Hollywood. I liked what Britney Murphy's character did though - brutal and tight, but it couldn't happen to a nicer bloke - ha ha ha!

If you want a REAL broadminded laugh though - check out "Fear of a black hat" - it's the black version of the Spinal Tap movie and it's pure genius; Ice Cold, Tasty Taste and Tone Def - what names!!!!

You don't think this might be a piss take? Culture and Rap studies, ie C & RAP = CRAP!!
They teach Shakespear so why not rapping or LOTR.
