Sony HXD995 ?Tuner failed

Posted by: Dungassin on 27 July 2010

Already posted this query on AVForums, but just in case there's some reader here who doesn't go there and might know the answer ...

Over the past few years we've owned 4 Sony DVD recorders : HXD995, HXD860, 2 HXD710s. One of the 710s failed and was replaced by the 995.

SWMBO has the 995 in the living room, along with a Goodmans PVR. I've got the 860 and remaining 710 in my study. Why so many recorders? Well ... it's amazing how many of the things we want to watch are actually all on at the same time. Smile

The user interface on these Sony recorders has got steadily worse with each "upgrade" in their range, to the point where the 995 is actually quite often quite difficult to use.

Anyway, back to the problem.
SWMBO called me downstairs earlier this evening while I was busy setting up my 2TB Buffalo Pro NAS. She'd been watching "Doctors" ( Roll Eyes) recorded earlier, and when she finished, she pressed 1 to switch the freeview Tuner to BBC1, and was presented with a black screen and D001 in the top corner.

I tried the obvious - checked aerial, even switch aerial connectors around on the aerial distribution box. Still same result.

So, I did a Hard Reset. Now no evidence that the 995 has a freeview tuner at all! Moving through the inputs, L1, L2, PR1, PR2 are there, but nothing else. You can still play back recordings on the hard disc.

So, my conclusion is that the tuner has probably failed. Before I cart the load of junk off to the repair shop to see how much to fix it, does anyone have any other ideas?

Not looking forward to copying the contents of her DVD recorder hard disc onto DVD-R. Eek

Checked Coax and SCART connections presumably. I have had to wiggle scart plugs on the cable between my cable tuner box and my DVR ( NOT SONY) because of a black screen on a few occasions.

Well, this morning I was up before her, and managed to fiddle with the 995 without her "help". Following a suggestion on AVForums, I retuned the recorder's freeview tuner. All now working OK.

SWMBO has this bad habit of pressing buttons on remotes almost at random when things don't do exactly what she wants. As a result of this, I am very used to having to sort out HER equipment. Usually with great complaints from her when I actually have to resort to RTFM. It's amazing how often I have to resort to Hard Resets to restore all to order. This time the ordinary Hard Reset didn't work, so she must somehow have managed to lose all the stored stations!

Luckily enough (for her) she hadn't managed to erase all her recorded rubbish (soaps, reality TV ...)

If various companies fixed up a button press recorder for the remotes she uses, I think they'd be amazed at how many bugs she seems to find in their software. Roll Eyes

Dungassin, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has problems with thier SWMBO using the Naim kit. Got a Naim stereo set up with AV2 plus NAPV17v. Simples to use but SWMBO dosen't understand the AV bit. I tried to show her how it's connected in the hope she would see the logic of it. That was about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Did the RTFM bit waste of time. Must be genitic. We can't multi task they can't use Naim systems properly. (Wait for justified abuse from the female members on the forum). Mind you I don't know how to use that new peice of house kit call the I-ron and I-roning board.

You never know the penny might drop one day, then again I might win the lottery.

She can run the Naim gear that usually resides in the living room fine (see my profile). The Sony 995 is actually hers (although bought by me for her).

I keep her away from the Naim based AV setup (again, see my profile), because I really DON'T want her to upset it all. She couldn't even cope with it using the Harmony remote, which is set up with nice macros and everything. Roll Eyes

On the rare occasions she uses the TV in there, I only allow her access to the TV remote. Figure she can't do much damage with that! Smile

I do know how to use ironing boards, washing machines etc. Legacy of having to look after my girls when they were 2 and 3 months when SWMBO was in hospital for 3 weeks, and then rather ill for a few weeks after that.

In case you wonder why I put up with her, here's a photo from when she was 35. The bloke isn't me, but a friend of ours. She still looks pretty good even now at 62. Big Grin

I had to set up my Pronto with a one button Macro, which switches on the AV Amp, turns on the DVD,sets the input, which in turn fires up the projector, simple hey ,No SWMBO still manages to mess it up by pressing more buttons than is necessary.

I stay with my beacause she is the nicest most loving person I have ever met and I love her to bits. Smile She has her own system which I had to put together for her. Also just added an LP12 to it. Bought 2nd hand, rebuilt it for her and as you know it only has an on/off switch so she knows how to use it.

As far as the tv goes gets confused by the sky box/tv interface. Bless. Mind you she can do admin which I cannot do.

Can't complain really as she puts up with me and I don't know any other women that would do that.

Sounds just like mine. Smile
She does have a mediterranean temperament (she's Maltese), which means rather volatile, but I wouldn't really have her any other way. I do find it amusing when she tries to tell me how to take a photograph - when it was me who taught her all the "tricks" in the first place.

And as you say - she puts up with me. When I asked her why, she said it was because she "couldn't bear the thought of having to break another one in"

Lets keep them thinking like that when we know it's the other way round. My lady is from South London, where as I have greek blood in me although I was also born in South London.

I tried her with the Harmony, but she couldn't get her head round the idea of sometimes having to wait for about 20 seconds after pressing the appropriate ACTIVITY, before pressing the other buttons to play, turn volume up, change channel etc. Total lack of patience ... Smile
