If i say 65DaysOfStatic and Explotions In The Sky ... You Say?

Posted by: Absolute on 27 March 2009

Just wondered if there was anyone around here who knew these bands and knew of other similar stuff?

EITS is more chilled out and relaxed, whereas 65DOS is more complex and faster, get the blood pumping more. Im looking for recommendations that go in both directions. Excellent stuff to listen to when im studying, its just id like to introduce a bit more variation.

Cheers

Ooooh, its reappeared?

Anyways, apparently these two come under the genre of 'Instrumental Post-Rock'? Does that maybe stir any other recommendations in people?

Godspeed You Black Emperor would be worth a try...

Eits do some great records and could only be accused of them sounding a bit samey.....but they are very good so it would be a minor criticism. Although their inyl releases are awful and usually very dirty sounding the cd's are brilliant.

If you're looking for other recommendations then look no further than Isis or Neurosis. Neurosis are the grandfathers of the genre, but Isis have perfected it. The records Oceanic, Panopticon and most recently In the Absence of truth cannot be faulted.

Mogwai, GSYBE and the Red Sparrowes are also amazing. Pelican are ery close to Isis but not so good IMHO

Cheers Ryan, that certainly gives me something to sink my teeth into!

I bought "All Of I Sudden I Miss Everyone" by Explosions In The Sky a couple of weeks ago and would suggest you check out Mogwai's latest "The Hawk Is Howling".

I would also agree with ryan's observation about their vinyl pressings - not good at all.

Cheers, ill make sure i stay away, which is a shame really as music like this has such potential to sound really fantastic on vinyl.

Mogwai has been put on the list, however Isis and Neurosis seemed to spoil everything by screaming.

If you can't get into the vocals then try the latest Isis record- In the Absence of truth- the screaming vocals have gone to be replaced by quite melodic singing. Similar progression to My Dying Bride.

Explosions in the sky's music is great, its just the vinyl is poor.

Mogwai are great though.

Great thread! I am a gig fan of EITS but had no idea who else was in the genre. Just the other day I added a Pandora channel for them and one for Apocolyptica hoping to find more artist like them. Thanks for suggestions.

There are loads of these bands around at the moment and its probably as close to classical as you can get without listening to classical. Large soundscapes with intimate and complex arrangements.

Red Sparrowes are a collaboration of quite a few of the bands, have no vocals but its amazing. Although God Speed You black Emporer are brilliant to and just that little bit different in their approach.

I've also picked up a couple of records by A Silver Mt Zion. Very wierd in places and stark at times, but incredibly delicate and beautiful in places too.

Well worth checking out if you'e into this kind of stuff. I am!

Plugged elsewhere on this forum - Mono - well worth a listen (and feature quite heavily, if you'll pardon the pun, on spotify)

PF, I've only got one Mono record and its again very similar in make up to the others, in that it can be absolutely mesmerising.

I really should check out more of their stuff.

Go for it. And try to catch them live. I'm intrigued by your description of A Silver Mt Zion so am going to track them down - hadn't heard of them before. Thanks for the tip!

Godspeed Your Black Emperor ! and related Montreal bands like "The Silver Mt.Zion" and "Do Make Say Think" made a lot of innovative music in my opinion.
My favorit is the 2007 dubble album, made by Godspeed: "lift yr.skinny fists like antennas to heaven!" (see photo).

Paul, got that one on vinyl and it really is truly groundbreaking. I've got a few of their records but don't seem to listen to them as much as I probably should.

They are very orchestral and dramatic, probably more so than any of the other bands mentioned. A definite mood band for me, but if you're in the mood for them then there's little else to touch them.

Luxen,

there are a few of those that i don't know such as Leech, Russian Circles, Caspian and Nihiling.

Are they towards the GSYBE end of the spectrum or the Neurosis end?

Melodic, more like Explosions, Mogwai...not so hard/brutal..

Russian Circles are sooo good...

Luxen,

thanks for the recommendations...i'll definitely be checking them out along with the other bands mentioned.

I got Russian Circles- Station today. Its really good. Very like EITS but still quite unique.

I really do feel that this musical genre is the way foward, especially for heavy music. The combination of heaviness with melody and melancholy and feeling (which i feel to be the major component of all of this genre) is absolutely compelling.

I've said i already, but its as close to good classical compositions as anything I've heard.

Looks like some excellent recommendations from Luxen!

Ill be sure to check a few of them out once these exams have stopped controlling my life. At the moment im mainly listening to/absorbing 60DoS, Mogwai and EITS whilst also seeming to enjoy a lot of punk at the moment.

I really don't get how my brain works, but its all good fun.

Hey, nothing wrong in having a healthy diversity to your musical tastes. When I was in my earlier years I was a complete metalhead, especially thrash and death metal and thought it was wrong to like other styles of music.

But as you become more enlightened you begin to realise that other musical genres have a lot to offer.

If you want to try to combine some of the more diverse styles with punk, check out the Refused. Their record 'the shape of punk to come' is brilliant although takes a few listens to get it. Also check out Comets on Fire....kind of free jazz rock ikn places, but very good.

Totally, the diversity of music i listen too is very broad, and only ever growing, i just find it interesting that when you can be really into one area another seemingly totally different, can grab you at the same time.

Refused and Comets on Fire have been added to the list. Cheers.

Let's not forget Labradford. Highly recommended. Quite varied set of albums.
