Baseball 2003

Posted by: ErikL on 01 June 2003

As the midway point of the season approaches (and I start to pay attention) I'm starting to hope for a few things:

- Roger Clemens is beat up in a game or in the subway, is sidelined, and is stuck on 299 wins all year (especially after donning a cocky "300" patch in his start a few days ago)... and then retires.

- The Expos, the league's best talent developer, win the NL East. Nobody but Ted Turner and his traitor/trolip Jane Fonda likes the Braves anymore.

- The Dodgers set an example, again, for ethnic harmony in America and bring another foreigner onto the team- maybe someone from India... or how about Iraq?

- Red Sox versus Sammy Sosa and the Cubs in the World Series. It would be great for baseball and for two cities of fanatical fans with long droughts.

Any other hopes or predictions?

I can never decide who I support in Baseball other than hating the Yankees and Mike Piazza (not sure why but I was on Roger Clemens side).

Braves @ Mets is our live game in the UK this week and is just about to start.

Mr. Robinson, glad you responded. I remember you stating Barry Bonds was your favorite player in the post-mullet era.

Do people in the UK like baseball much?

I guess lucky for you, Piazza isn't playing today (But if you're like me it takes the fun out of it- you can't at least cheer for him getting beaned at 95 mph).

It has a small but loyal fanbase here although I stumbled into by accident on account of having regular bouts of insomnia (live games are on overnight here) and am far from an expert. My first season of watching it was the famous "Run for 61" Sosa/BigMac year which got me hooked quite quickly and I'd count the Yankees Diamondbacks World Series as one of my all-time favourite sports events.

We get two live games a week on terrestial TV basically whatever ESPN decides to show on Sunday Night Baseball and the Wednesday equivalent. The UK broadcaster also does a pre-game news and results show with SportsCentre highlights and results round up and so on. Sometimes they show "This Week in Baseball". I don't have anywhere near the depth of knowledge or time to follow it very closely but always seem to get drawn in more and more as the season progresses.

John C who posts here occasionally is a big Baseball fan and he is the only other UK based person (other than Americans) who I know who follows the sport.

You don't actually like the Cardinals, do you? Wink

Matthew- I can understand your insomnia-led interest in baseball. A few years back my lack of sleep had me watching pre-recorded Aussie rules football and WRC.

Matthew, I agree on the Yanks/D'backs series. The pitching of Johnson and Schilling was amazing. I'd like to help you find a team suited to your taste... Wink

- Oakland A's. One of the lowest payroll's in baseball, but GM Beane picks great college talent everyone has overlooked and develops it well. Consistently a challenger in the AL, and likely to be for a while. Plus Oakland is a shady blue-collar town with lots of Snoop Dogg types, ad opposed to the boring wine and cheese crowd my team is afflicted with.

- Seattle Mariners. My hometown team. No big egos or troublemakers, and they play an exciting style. They have the three sweetest swings in baseball in John Olerud, Ichiro, and Edgar Martinez. Fans are Microsoft/dot-com millionaires, software programmers with green hair, and hicks with mullets.

- Los Angelese Dodgers. My favorite as you know, but a love/hate relationship. Historically oustanding pitching and defense, but not the greatest runs production. Manager Jim Tracey is a class act, and guys like Shawn Green and Paul Lo Duca are classic throwback players. I'm convinced once they get new owners they'll develop their farm/minor system to produce the league's best talent again.

I'm sure I've offered unneeded assistance, but I love to talk about baseball, especially teams that have integrity and class! (On that note, I'll admit that St. Louis is a top notch organization and also worthy if you were to pick a favorite. I just never liked them for unknown reasons.)

My team sheet

Lou Brock (LF)
Joe Medwick (RF)
Rogers Hornsby (2B)
Mark McGwire (1B)
Stan (The Man) Musial (CF)
Ken Boyer (3B)
Ted Simmons (C)
Ossie Smith (SS)
Bob Gibson (P)

Game 7. I'll take on any other franchise in fantasy league world series.

Ludwig,

I don't think I want to acquire a favoured MLB team as that way lies hours of dedicated Interweb research every day over the whole 168 game season.

I am happy have a list of likes (which includes the Mariners and the A's who I started to like after Giambi left for the Yankees) and dislikes (Yankees and Braves mainly). If I was going to support anyone it would probably be the Red Sox as you've got to like a club with such a long and sustained history of glorious failure.

Matthew

PS My fave Baseball Trivia fact: Bernie Williams is a classical trained guitarist who has just recorded a CD of Jazz guitar.

Ludwig – You chose the wrong ‘Sox’; it should be the White Sox versus anybody in the N.L.! Of course it won’t happen this year as my Sox are playing very badly this year. I’m sure once they are out of contention they will start to win.

John C – I think the Yankees could put together a better all time fantasy team. They won the World Series 25 times during the 20th Century.

The Cubs stink!

John L ..no chance...Let's see the team.

John

October 64 baby!!!
Posted on: 02 June 2003 by ErikL
My lineup:

Jackie Robinson (2B)
Maury Wills (SS)
Duke Snider (CF)
Mike Piazza (LF, not C)
Roy Campanella (C)
Steve Garvey (1B)
Ron Cey (3B)
Brett Butler (RF, not CF)
Sandy Koufax (P)

Bullpen: Don Drysdale, Orel Hershiser, Don Sutton, Pedro Martinez, Hideo Nomo
Pinch Hitters: Kirk Gibson, Manny Mota
Manager: Tommy Lasorda
Dugout Lackeys/ Batboys: Dusty Baker, Daryl Strawberry

Your Cards wouldn't muster a hit against this team Razz I'd throw in a new pitcher each cycle so your batters would see a new delivery each at-bat Big Grin

I think we could staff the media booth with some classic announcers from both sides.

Fair enough. I usually start following the season closely in July.

I much rather watch a ballgame live as opposed to on TV. I tend to chat with friends the first 4-5 innings, maybe walk out to the bullpen, and then get settled in for the final innings.

Of course baseball can't even approach the excitement of college basketball's March Madness, which is my favorite sports spectacle to attend or watch on TV, hands down.

Spoken like a true Iron! Or a Scotsman, come to think of it. Wink

Here you go John C; from a non-Yankees fan:

Willie Randolph (2B)
Derek Jeter (SS)
Lou Gehrig (1B)
Babe Ruth (OF)
Mickey Mantle (OF)
Joe DiMaggio (OF)
Graig Nettles (3B)
Thurman Munson (C)
Whitey Ford (SP)
Goose Gossage (RP)

They would probably not steal a lot of bases, but they would certainly clear the bases often. I was amazed when I read that the Yankees had won the World Series twenty-five times during the 20th Century. My Sox could only do it once during that same period; of course, they also threw one series during 1919.

Ludwig - Did Mike Piazza ever play the outfield? I thought that he only played catcher for his whole career.

John Litwin
Posted on: 02 June 2003 by ErikL
Wow, no Reggie Jackson in the line-up. Maybe instead of snacking on Powerbar's they can munch on those awful Reggie Bars from the late '70's.

John L, you're correct about Piazza. But I wouldn't expect the opposing team to get any hits, let alone hits into the outfield. Wink

Back to real baseball, it's a shame Giambi is the leading vote getter among AL 1B so far. I think he's batting .230-.250. You can cast votes here: http://vote.mlb.com/landing.html

The Dodgers lineup can't compete with mine.
Mike Piazza give me a break.

Koufax v Gibson is the best pitching matchup of all time ofcourse, so maybe the bums would have a squeak.

The 3,4,5 Yankee dream ticket easily outpointed by my 3,4,5.

Rogers Hornsby has never been truly lauded by the cards as he had an affair with the owners wife. Oddly a descendant of said owner De Witt I think is part owner nowadays. One of the true greats but as volatile as Ty Cobb.

John
Posted on: 02 June 2003 by matthewr
Rogers Hornsby is such a great name. Like a character from Michael Palin's "Over the Andes by Frog"

BTW I have seen this fantasy lineup arguments resolved by simulated games with 1 pitch per post with various posters taking turns complete with full box scores. Hardcore baseball fans truly are the US Sports equivalent of cricket obsessives.
Posted on: 02 June 2003 by John C
Matthew baseball has all the great names.

Kenesaw Mountain Landis was commissioner and bane of Hornsby's life and as for Branch Rickey..well he may have invented the farm system but..

John
Posted on: 02 June 2003 by ErikL
It's interesting to note how well Piazza compares to some greats. His career AVG is .321, HR are 354, RBI 1088, all while catching and in less than 12 years; compared for example to Musial's .331, 475, 1951, while picking daisies in LF and at 1B for 22 years. People just have a hard time admitting that Piazza is clearly the best offensive player at his position ever.

It would be nice to see him get healthy and move to 1B or 3B so he can enjoy a 20+ year career.

Are we ready to step out of fantasy land and talk about this season?
Posted on: 02 June 2003 by ErikL
Matthew- Very quickly, Branch Rickey was the Dodger head who, after leaving that podunk-town of St. Louis, integrated the game and brought Jackie Robinson to the Dodgers. The best baseball around that time was being played in the Negro Leagues, not the Major Leagues.

Oh, Sammy...

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=15&u=/ap/20030604/ap_on_sp_ba_ga_su/bbo_interleague_rdp

I want to believe it was a mistake. I wonder when we'll get the inspection results for his other bats.

Shouldn't someone in MLB headquarters be suspended for specifying juiced balls the last 5+ years?
Posted on: 04 June 2003 by matthewr
Sammy would never cheat.

The fact that people like Bonds (and I think BigMac) come to the plate wearing full body armour to take away the inside pitch is where the real "cheating" is.
