what women want

Summer nights tend to be balmy in Memphis and so chilled mint juleps are de rigueurwhen entertaining lady friends.

Choice of music can be a bit tricky.

Kylie Minogue is to be avoided at all costs. Well-bred Southern belles have no truc with Antipodean bimbos.

Slip Jean Sablon into the Karik and you can expect a favorable response.

Billy Bob Thornton ( PRIVATE RADIO ) had a remarkable effect on my woman last evening and she is still shaken by the experience.

What do you guys put on the platter to please your partners?

Generalisation: most women in my experience (British), invariably have the following in their record collections:
1. Everything But the Girl
2. New Order
3. Eddi Reader
4. 'Graceland'
5. At least two African (Real World) CDs
6. An early Elton John album.
7. The Beautiful South.

Nothing wrong with any of the above (though personally I have no time for New Order and Beautiful South, witless bands both), so I would generally try and move them forward with other stuff. Diana Krall usually goes down well, and the first Ben Folds Five album when we're both pissed (that's drunk in American). These days not so bothered!

Chris

I have little experience of British girls but surely some of them must have succumbed to Jimmy Scott's rendition of WHEN DID YOU LEAVE HEAVEN.

I find that Norwegian ladies develop an immediate fondness for Jimmy's work.

Swedish babes prefer Ella or The High Priest - GEORGIA ON MY MIND is a particular favorite.

Danes have no preferences.

The Finns enjoy any music with a Tango ambiance but plump for Olavi Virta if pressed.

Depends on who it is.

While some prefer Metallica (indicator: White boots, leather jacket)

others prefer Depeche Mode (contraindications: insecure types)

then theres the David Sylvian/Rain Tree Crow soothers

or plastic fantastic like Elton John (not usually played around here).

Ella/Billie/Frank seem to transcend all (or at least most) of the indications/contraindications above.

Middle-of-the-road safe stuff appears to be EBTG etc etc.

Requests for Julia Fordham should result in an instant ejection and a boquet of flowers next day including a complimentary booking with her shrink.

Generally I find my wife likes compilations for the car - could this be a symptom of the fairer sexes shorter attention span?

nice to know that all women are the same and all like the same sort of music. Just like us men eh?

My wife likes to listen to Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock etc in the car. When she's in the mood however it's 10,000 Maniacs or perhaps something classical (Music for Anne Rice is a favourite). When she's _really_ in the mood it needs to be Genuwine or Prince...

Steve
