Damon Albarn - what was that all about?

Posted by: rupert bear on 09 December 2006

Last night on Jools Holland, DA's odd new band called The Good The Bad and the Queen (????!). Last time we saw him he was playing the Somalian noseflute with a bunch of African tribesmen, now he's trying to look like Jack the Ripper and sounding like a very doom-laden Julian Cope. Hmmmm....

Its laughable isn't it that at one time that joker was on a par with Noel Gallagher when he was in the Kinks pastiche band, Blur. Now he's just a pathetic poseur flitting from style to style trying to maintain some sort of intellectual credibility.

Bob,

Don't sit on the fence. Tell us what you really think :-)

Damon's outfit were just plain weird. The 1st track seemed to be played out of time, no doubt on purpose. They made a bit more sense on the other tracks. What was with the Oliver Twist outfit too?

BTW, what was the name of the young Scots lad in the other group. He played with an indian drum and a violin either side of him. I liked that one.

Scott Matthews or the guy with the funny trousers - Hudson?

I'm think it was Scott Matthews. He was dressed like an office worker but sang like a god.

common Bob that's a bit harsh. he's written some pretty catchy tunes that may not be to your taste but at least he's taking a chance and doing what he wants too...

If you knew what I really thought about him you'd realise how restrained my original comments were!

Da has done a superb job with The Gorillaz. Awesome albums.

It takes all sorts! I've seen them on the TV (Electric Proms & Jools) a couple of times. Have to say I like some of the stuff, especially Kingdom of Doom - which they seem to play a lot, maybe it is a "key" track?

Interesting because I hated Blur and cannot stand DA's voice, but at least he is trying something different unlike many I could mention.

Well,

For all the good things he's done, and there are plenty of shining examples, that performance on Later was complete twaddle. Pure and simple tosh.

Nothing wrong with a bit of experimentation, just a bit surprising he didn't catch himself on before going public with it!
