Active systems - can you mix old and new 250's?

Are there any problems going active with an olive 250 plus a new reference 250?

John

You need to check with Naim, re the possibility of gain variability.

I wouldn't mix and match, personally. I've gone from an 'olive' 250 to a 'reference' and they sound very different to me.

Thanks for the replies, this is what I suspected. A crafty way of selling more amps!

I don't know for sure ,but some of the Hi Fi buffs out there will soon tell me ,but couldn't you balance any gain differances between the two amps with the frequency controls in the Naxo unit, I realise that there may be a differant sound from the old compared to the new 250 but I would have thought that you could balance the gain output by this means .I now look forward to being torn to pieces by the electronic wizz [If you will excuse the expression ] kids out there, all the best.

Sorry John3
Ihave just had another thought[unfortunatly the older you get the slower your brain works or at least thats my excuse .If youwere to use say the new 250 for the bass speakers and the old er one for the tweeters Iwould have thought that should be o.k. my set up uses two 250,s of differant ages all though they do not have the time differance that your,s would have . they some of you older forum members might remember him, it was also checked out by the " lads" from PHONOGRAPHY acouple of years ago when I replaced my 82 for a 52 and they thought the set up was ni their words ok and did n't need anything altering of course the new naxo units may be factory set you would have to check or try it for yourself.
As I'm new to this computer game you will have to consider that there is a smiley face here until I find out how to do it , still waiting to be torn to pieces
enjoy the music

I asked Naim directly if the olive and new 250s could be mixed in an active SBL system when the new line was introduced.

The answer was no.

However, you could use a single new 250 across the tweeters and the older 250 across the woofers but the SNAXO has to rewired internally to do this and it is not Naim's recommended setup for active 2-way speakers.

i have had problems with mixing "incompatible" 250's in an active system before. solution was to trade in one of the 250's for a more recent vintage -- and fortunately, this fixed the problem. so my advice is -- watch out and listen very carefully before you buy.

my active system still sounds very good indeed.

enjoy

With a three-way system (and therefore an odd number of amplifiers) this typically wouldn't be a problem, placing the odd man out on the tweeters.

From what I've heard, the gap in performance between the quad-module NAP 250s of the past and the current "Reference Series" is enough to justify proper matching across a vertical bi-amp system. (Haven't seen the insides of the new amp, though!)

Ken C:

Have you tried SL2s in your system yet?
