Cheap wall brackets?

Posted by: wal riley on 26 March 2001

First off, i'm skint so it has to be a cheap solution, but does anyone have any suggestions for fixing the hi-fi to a wall? I've already done this, but with Wickes own-brand brackets; you know, the sort of thing that they use in shops, where a U shaped baton is fixed to the wall, into which clips a sort of right-angled triangular support that you rest the shelf upon. It does the job, with a couple of varnished hardwood shelves, but it doesn't appear to be too rigid from side to side. Any suggestions? smile

Hi Wal,

What you could try for a cheap n' chearful approach if you are installing in "typically u.k. sized" alcoves is to use Conti-board avilable from B&Q etc.

First you will need to put some supporting batons on the rear and sides in the alcove (1 x 2 inch (or 2 x 2)roughcut or CLS will do just fine,Cut the legnth and depth of Conti-board to required measurements

Sit the board on the batons, attach it at the rear and side batons using panel pins or screws (preferably brass ;-) ) and then attach a suitable legnth of "Dado rail" accross the front to give the front edge a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.....et Voila....one very cheap and chearful support.

Wal,

little tip should you do the above...

Remember to drill some holes / slots either in the battoning itself or easier still just forward of the batons when the Conti-board is in place to allow some rudimentary cable routing/management,they don't have to be big,(so long as you can run mains and signal seperatly around your system).

Chris

Thanks guys! By the way, did anyone else have trouble getting hold of hi-fi+ this month? I couldn't get it anywhere in liverpool and ended up ordering it direct over the phone, from the publishers themselves. razz
