The Hurt Locker

Just finished it on DVD. Slightly disappointed. Acting was good but nothing special. Nice effects on the explosions. No twists in the plot. No suspence. No depth to make the movie dramatic. At the end, I failed to come out with a message.
The depiction of Iraqi streets was very realistic and the arabic dialect was spot on. The movie transports you to the war zone. Still, I can't see how it won an oscar. Any thoughts?

Yeah. I didn't really want a message. There is nothing simple enough in these situations that can be distilled into a 2-hour movie. It was just a glimpse into the world these guys inhabit, no more, no less. It sucks. That's the message.
I don't like to be preached at, Avatar-style.

'Cos it wasn't Avatar.

Each to their own. Personally I thought it was excellent, conveying the ever-present danger in the streets of Iraq at the time and the tension of dealing with unexploded bombs.
Good acting for a couple of relative unknowns too.

I love war movies. This is one of the best since Platoon in my opinion.

Saw a bit of it, and got annoyed at the bit where a taxi driver drove at high-speed through a cordon surrounding the ATO.
He would have been shot to bits.
Picky picky picky.

Hi
Agreed.
I was lent it a few weeks ago before all of the Oscars and , "would not have happened like this" war veterans criticism of some technical innacuracies, but I was luckily not infected.
Going into it with no precoceptions I found it a tight and tense story .Thoroughly enjoyed it and the sound and editing was superb with a conatant feeling of danger.
We have a full Linn Active Klimax Cinema system with a Sim 3 chip DLP projector with a Crowson Technologies low frequency system which really adds to the tension.
The problem with anything, whether hi-fi,a piece of music,or a restaraunt is that expectations can be raised which can spoil the experience.
Regards.

Well I did tell you straight away, Colin!
The picture quality on the kit you used, however, was bloody good.

Not yet seen HL yet but caught Green Zone: http://trailers.apple.com/trai...universal/greenzone/ at the cinema last night. (You gotta love Orange Wednesdays)
To be honest, i should have put off seeing it last night as i've had a banging head for most of the week and the cine operator decided this film had to be played loud. Very loud. Thanks for that.
It's a decent film though, moves very quick but a bit one paced and doesn't give you much of a breather. The shaky cam is a bit too much at times.
I think it deserves another viewing, though this time at home, so i can turn the volume down a bit.
And i've still got that headache.

I watched half an hour of it and saw it turning into 'jar head'
Although I appreciate the hundrum of war is as ever present as action, I am not particularly interested in watching nothing happen for a couple of hours.
I presume hurt locker picks up a bit?

I have to agree with garyi on this one. The whole movie is just a repetition of the first 20 minutes over and over and over again. Last 15 minutes failed to close the movie or conclude the story. So, to answer your question... I don't think it picks up really...

Maybe I like a slice of life type film. I found it engrossing

I am not against the whole thing, but these types of films seems to will lots of awards in America, and there for a presume an 'American Thing' which is fair enough.
I do like Platoon though.

Would not watch it again but found it compelling just the same. I don't think it is meant to be a full story, rather just a glimpse into the lives of soldiers doing an impossible job in an inhospitable environment.
The movie on the whole made me feel rather empty and unsympathetic to the plight of those in Iraq and Afghanistan and I'm not sure if that was the intent of the film?
