Introducing Joss Stone.....

Posted by: worm on 28 March 2007

A smallish ‘guilty secret’ of mine is a liking for Joss Stone.

So I was quite looking forward to her new album ‘Introducing Joss Stone’.

However, since it arrived a week or so ago I have been completely under whelmed.

The music has moved in a sort of hip-hop / urban direction which makes Joss Stone’s great voice just sound like everyone else in that space. Lots of pointless rapper grunting in the background – and a Vinnie Jones intro that quickly tires. Also the quality and style of the recording itself, in my opinion, is not as good as her first two albums.

So unless there is a return to form looks like I will be able to restrict my guilty secret to the first two albums.

Anyone else heard it or got any thoughts?

Cheers

I have a secret liking of Joss Stone too, but have been put off buying her latest album because of her latest single release. If what you are saying about her new album is true, then my reluctance is justified....

Poor Joss, a case of too much, too big, too soon ?
It seems like there has been a long line of promising youngsters, with great sounding voices, who never made the transition to being great singers. Except for little stevie windwood of course.

According to all the interviews I have heard from her she states that this is the only album she has made she actually likes. The other 2 were the record company's idea of how she should sound and not hers.
In one she mentioned that she thought no one should buy the last 2 discs as they were in her eyes that bad.

Read her interview in Q. What a dimwit. I know she's young but blimey she's no advert for the Bitish education system is she?

The Bitish education system eh Jamie?
Never trust a young artist managed by their mother is always a good motto. I know she's fired hers now, but that was how she started. I cite Bonnie Langford as exhibit A, m'lud. And probably Charlotte Church as exhibit B.

Did any of you see Amy Winehouse Live at the BBC having a laugh at Joss's expense? It was very funny, plus she finished with a blinding cover of the Specials "Monkey Man".

The story was that Joss had done a showcase for the new stuff a couple of days previous and made a total mess of it. The event was then topped off by her father and brother getting into a fight together back stage afterwards.

Just hearing Amy chuckling her way though made it even funnier.

IMO she ain't got any right to laugh at anyone else until she gets some talent. I don't like Joss either BTW.

Lunchtime News:-

Joss Stone storms into US chart

British soul singer Joss Stone's third album has gone straight to number two in the US Billboard album chart.
The album, Introducing Joss Stone, is the highest new entry by a British female artist in US chart history, according to Music Week magazine.

Billboard said it sold 118,000 copies in its first week - 11,000 behind the number one by US rock act Modest Mouse.

Other UK stars making waves in the US include Amy Winehouse at 10, Corinne Bailey Rae at 22 and Lily Allen at 41.

Saw her at T in the park a couple of years ago and was utterly amazed that someone with such a weak tuneless voice was actually making money from music. Nuff said

And Little Stevie Wonder, too.

All best,

Which makes me start wondering about it the other way around - how many singers can you think of who started out really rubbish and actually turned out to be quite good eventually? (Not including Peter & Katie...)

Read Mojo last night and they gave this album **** - which I am at a loss to understand.

It all seems a bit ironic really. Normally it is the record companies pushing for a musical dumbing down. This appears to be Joss pushing for the dumbing down and it has delievred US chart success.

I had doubts about whether to purchase this album and, after reading this thread, have no plans to. Actually, I was somewhat disappointed in her second album. I will, however, continue to listen to her first album from time to time, because I do think her voice sounds great on the first album.

Perhaps after she does the video thing and dumbs down for the masses, and then becomes yesterday's news, she'll return to the style of the first album.

I agree with much of what has been written here. I enjoyed her first album and thought she had a lot of potential. From the way the new album has been described, I doubt I'll be buying it either. Will she be bothered that a load of old fogeys don't like her new album when she's in at number 2 in the States?

It's not likely is it?
