Janos Starker Recordings

Posted by: Markus on 10 December 2003

Many times previously I've discussed the unique recordings of Janos Starker, produced by him personally and available only on the Star record label from Ars Nova. The last copies of these masterworks (all on glorious vinyl) are available on list 220 from:

Specifically, look at items 531-534.

Of all six recordings, my favorite and the one I return to over time is the Cassado. If you appreciate solo cello and Starker's collossal technique, you'll be gratified at the lush beauty of this composition and recording. None of my previous posts discussing these recordings have ever apparently received any attention or response on this Forum, which is truly just fine with me if no one here cares about solo cello or the classical repertoire. But, seeing as how this may be your last chance to obtain these rare (and fine sounding) recordings, I thought I'd mention it today.

At least it is too late for the Cassado. They're all gone.

Sorry.

Thanks for the tip. They are down to three, all of wich I ordered. I recently found some of his out of print EMI CDs. Brekshire outlet had the two disc profile set for $10 and Tower in downtown NYC had the 5 disc Bach set (EMI France) for $28. This is the 50's mono cycle coupled with Martzy's sonatas. For those that don't know it some of the Tower Records in larger cities do there own importing and often have titles that are not available on the web site.
