Campaign for clemency

Chaps
I notice there is a bit of tension and some undercurrents going on here at the moment so I ask for some clemency.
How about before we post we all consider the following;
1] Don’t thread crap.
2] If you want to contribute, make it constructive that adds to the discussion, not some flippant one liner.
3] Make this a friendly place where the many potential contributors who are lurking feel they want to join in too.
4] NO BULLYING.
5] Remember this is part of Naims “face” on the internet. They can pull this at any time. Wouldn’t that be a shame?
Happy posting.

HEAR HEAR
But the one liners are OK, provided they continue to be amusing - & some are hilarious - and make a valid point.
Agree flippant comments are not required.
The long reads may be interesting to write for the author, but can be hard going for readers - less is more in many cases
Joe - The correct term is, "Hear Hear"
Its an abbreviation of "hear him, hear him", used mostly in British House of Commons.
It indicates a listener's agreement with the point being made by a speaker when in the house & were applause is not allowed - except is really exceptional circumstances.

Hi Julian
I agree with your points, and they are worth repeating regularly.
Although many of our contributors are very clever and knowledgeable people, I think we should not forget that all contributions are not professional contributions. The standard of writing and spelling does not have to meet professional standards. And there is nothing in the rules that says we cannot be wrong or make fools of ourselves sometimes.
The only thing that really offends me is abusive language, or pointless arrogance.
I maintain that this forum is unique among forums because it aspires to the atmosphere of a gentelman's club (with gentleladies present too, of course). To voice disagreement all one ought to need to do is to conspicuously clear one's throat and frown at the person in question.
I may be in the minority, but I look to this forum for a certain amount of humour and silliness. I do think we can take ourselves too seriously at times. Hifi is in the real of pleasure.
But on the whole I think we are well behaved and courteous, to the extent that when somebody isn't, it shows up for all to see - not much need for moderation when such behaviour causes international frowning and clearing of the throat! If there were any drunks or bores on this forum - and I am certain there are not - they would be very visible.
And we are respectful of each other's kit - I, as an owner of Linn amplification have never been publicly mocked - to prove the point.
As gentlemen and women we each know the maxim that a chap's hifi has the same sanctity and protection as a chap's wife. We may all know that the item in question is ugly, outdated, does not perform well and be downright unreliable, but we are too polite to mention or even appear to notice this.

Don
That is a very helpful addition to Julian's very sensible request. There has been a bit of snidiness and downright nastiness of late, which is definitely not desirable. There is a fine line between gentle ribbing and causing real upset, which can be hard to balance at times, but it would be a shame for a ban on humour. Hifi is, after all, not really very exciting, and it's often the other stuff that makes the Forum interesting.

I agree Julian and thanks too for Don's supportive post - I'm afraid I'm a bit guilty of perhaps not taking things seriously but a bit of silliness is good for the soul.
I cannot for the life of me imagine why anyone should wish to be deliberately unpleasant and hurtful to other folk, but it's a hazard of computer forums that every now and again things can be taken the wrong way. I've always taken the view that the poster hasn't done this deliberately.
Thanks to Naim and the light hand of the moderators on the tiller this forum continues to be a very special place for us.
(So you've got Linn amplification then Don. Well, you are mocked!)

Adam. Nice to see you here again...
Guys. Thanks for your support.
I am all for the banter and have been known to contribute a little myself too.
This forum is already better than most I frequent. Let's keep it that way [and banish the petty squables too?]

Should the banishing of
and
be considered? As these are often open to misinterpretation and to rely upon the power of words alone to dam or praise is in the gift of but a few.

I'm all for freedom of expression myself and don't think we should seek to 'banish' anything but the most profane or personally offensive.
To banish the petty is a form of covert censorship IMHO......Good thread though.

Yes, but we occasionally get something from someone who's completely deranged. Do we just stand by with our hands, metaphorically, in our pockets, whistling?
(There was one a few days ago. Are we supposed just to ignore it?)

Could you specify please? It's quite difficult to follow a thread like this without examples, as each person's idea of acceptable or not will differ. Cheers, Paul.
Posted on: 29 January 2010 by graham55
No, as that would be directly contrary to the "happy clappy" feel that this thread is intended to engender.
But just check if someone might be spending far too much time listening to mains cords, rather than the music that those cords enable his system to reproduce.

Graham,
How can a man with three pair of Quads in one system accuse a guy of being OTT for asking about mains cable preferences?

dave

Well, perhaps you'd enlighten me as to what's wrong with having three pairs of ESL57s? I sure as f*ck don't obsess about the sound of my mains cables!
But perhaps you see a dichotomy there that I've missed! I love music, but am not bothered with the peripherals.

Graham,
Three pairs dude...Three pairs...
...not that there's anything wrong with it.
You simply want to get closer to the music which is perfectly fine. So does Efraim but he chooses to get a bit a closer with mains cables. Like we've discussed, changing mains cable isn't going to get you very far compared to better boxes or even speakers but it may be the best he can do with finances available. Should he be denied the opportunity to approach things in the best way he can because you and I feel mains cables are not that great of an improvement?
best,
dave

I agree with you Dave.
Without people making comments from, or inviting use to think from, left-field then we'll all be thinking along the same lines and keep our narrow minds.
For example, when the dealer I bought my VPI Scout from told me that I really ought to think about getting a record washing machine, I thought he was spinning a yarn to get me to buy more stuff from him.
One year later I bought an HW16.5 and it was opened up my music so much ! You can argue about the improved quality of the disc, but it's allowed me to pick up used discs from the 60's, 70's and 80's and once washed I've been happy to play and enjoy them.
When he first mentioned it I thought he was an obsessive nut, now I'm a convert.
All ideas and questions should be welcome !!

So we didn't make it past page one before the digs came in.
I applaud Julian for committing the subect to a thread, and as he says there have been a few threads lately that have not made pleasant reading.
Some things we should all bear in mind is that this is very much an international forum, and for a lot of people English is not their first language.
Some of the subtle jokes, turns of phrase, and friendly banter can be seen as insulting and aggressive. The first thing I try to do with each post I make is to immediately re-read it to make sure it is as clear as I would like.
Sometimes people accuse people of not reading what they had written, some people hadn't meant what they had written, and some people read what wasn't written!
This has, in the main, been a very pleasant place to pop in to a couple of times a day, let's please keep it that way.
And the best response can sometimes be to ignore it, rather than rising to the bait.
Enough drivel from me, for the moment anyway.
Cheers
John

This is a great forum. Controversial topics generate controversy. As it should be. No-one has to read any of it. Let's keep it light, polite, informative and entertaining. I'll admit I step over the line a bit from time to time. Apologies to anyone offended. No apologies that I won't buy into or "respect" some of the ideas that I consider to be totally wacko, however. Let's debate them. That's the fun bit.
