Well, I don't claim this makes any sense to me either, but just in case you're not aware of the various passive crossover arrangements.
From s/no 6701 onwards the speaker was always delivered in an active configuration - bass/mid/treble inputs on back of speaker, no internal crossover (much like NBL today). The "4 ohm" crossover fits into the stand. (You probably already knew this).
Pre-6701 s/no, they were delivered in either PMS (Pro Monitor System/active) or DMS (Domestic .../passive) forms.
The passive version has two 8 ohm crossovers per speaker. One drives the front-mounted bass, mid & treble unit. The other drives the internal bass, and top-mounted mid & treble.
Speakers from s/no 5575 - 6700 made these two boards available by removing a small panel in the base of the speaker. They can be easily converted from passive to active and back again.
Prior to this, they were not easily accessible, and were located at various positions in the box at various times throughout the production run. At one point I think they were between the two bass drivers (fairly easy to access), but have also been on the inside back panel - very tricky to get to. Would require unsealing the back bass driver which has a reputation for being hard to put back right.
For info, if you can get to the boards, you can wire them separately, and drive them with two stereo amps, which turns them from a 4ohm speaker with 1.7ohm minimum to an 8ohm speaker with 3.4ohm minimum. Nice. Very nice.
Sounds like he's describing the twinned 8 ohm crossovers mounted on an external board??
"Previous"? maybe these are from an older pair? If so, some re-wiring would have been required, as there would have to be six pairs of inputs on the back of the spkr - separately to each of the two bass, mid & trebles.
cheers, Martin
