In a word, me. I won't have 2 seperate boxes to play the little silver disks, and don't want the extra remote.

I'm happy with the results, and I guess that's all that matters.

Others opinions may vary.

Whoops, sorry if I've offended you Mike. I'll moderate my view a bit - DVD transports are usually pretty decent and can work well with a separate DAC.

Any particular model of Oppo?

There's currently only one James, the BD83, and its european equivalent which I believe is available round about now.

James, I've been using Pioneer video products for years now and I can say you can't go wrong with them. Pioneer blu-ray players might be a bit more expansive than other similar Japanese products in the entry range though. To me, a major advantage in using Pioneer dvd/blu-ray players is the possibility to deactivate all post-processing stuff if you like it this way. Menus are full of clever options and I think this is a major feature of this manufacturer.

...and you can similarly switch all the post-processing stuff off with the Oppo - a "Source Direct" mode was the main initial attraction for me as I've got a Lumagen video processor.

A couple of years ago when I was contemplating buying a Pioneer I was put off by the incredibly slow loading times for BluRay discs; I lost the will to live waiting for the blessed thing to get going!

Again, the Oppo is very fast indeed, a real advantage in my book.

PS, I don't have shares in Oppo or anything...

Not offended at all :-)

One thing that does bug the hell out of me. On both Sony and Pioneer, the unit will freeze up in the middle of play. When that happens, the only thing to be done is to unplug the unit and replug it to reset.

Thank God it doesn't happen often.

I'm hoping the next generation of Pioneer Elite will not suffer this defect.

Mike: I haven't seen this happen in 8 months. Have you tried a firmware upgrade? Unfortunately, those are fairly required on most players.

I have applied software upgrades twice, and am currently up to date.

The unit hasn't locked up now in over 3 weeks.

Never know when it's going to happen.

what hifi are a joke to be completely honest, i think if the oppo player had been receiving mixed reviews elsewhere then i could understand it but it has not been,Nothing but glowing reports for the price no matter who has tested it so far.I'm no fan boy as i don't even own the player but for crying out loud. Is everyone else wrong?

The euro version of the Oppo, the 831, has had its release postponed indefinitely. The only option is the 83 at present.
