Really BIG numbers...

A "Google" is 10 to the power 100.
A "Googleplex" is 10 ten to the power a Google.
A "Graham's" number is a number so vast that if you were to try to write one zero of the Graham's number on each atom in the universe, there would not be enough atoms to do it.
Is any of this at all useful?

Quote from Wiki -
Professor Ian Stewart is a member of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Warwick, but is also an honorary Wizard of the Unseen University. In our current podcast, Professor Stewart discusses the history of the Science of the Discworld books and explains why a leading mathematician is dabbling in the world of magic and fantasy.

The mathematician Ian Stewart for instance tells us that:
After Gödel, mathematical truths turned out to be an illusion.[/QUOTE]
He also states;
'Dennett's views on topics like consciousness and free will seem so much more sensible to me than most of the alternatives—I don't think that quantum mechanics or microtubules or nonalgorithmic computation have any chance of explaining our (apparent?) ability to make choices'
How 'bout that?

Really? I'm just too dumb to find it, let alone read it. Having dipped into the murky waters of the thread you refer too I find a stack of qoutes from other people. Perhaps the fabled book is an anthology?
One thing appears certain, it sure is not going to be called "One Man's Battle With Self Doubt (and Quantum Reality)".
Sorry Sniper, I'm sure I'm now due a pasting from your good self for being so rude. I'll take it on the chin!

Did you know that, over the last year, you have made precisely *one* post here that concerns Naim equipment?

And .....??
I'm quite happy with my Naim setup at the moment so I don't feel the need to post on that section of the forum at the moment (although I do regularly read other people's posts).
I'm not a regular poster here in the (aptly named) Padded Cell section either. I have posted on precisely 3 threads. There have been quite a few posts from me on those threads because I have felt the need to defend my position.
I don't really see what business it is of yours. Are you the newly (self) appointed forum policeman?

I just drew a triangle and measured all the angles and added them up and it came to 181 degrees? What does this mean? Do you think my triangle is worth as much as the Euro-lottery?

My point being, that the Forum is run by Naim, and paid for by naim for the benefit of those interested in Naim equipment. It is not supposed to be some kind of MSN service for the Werthers Original Brigade seen here of late, some of whom are too rude to accept an apology.
Like I said in another post, life is too short. There are enough real worries in the world and I'm adding three arseholes to my ignore list, which brings the total of people I've added to my "ignore" list to three.
You may care to reply, but it will be a monlogue.
Seriously, think about how you are coming across here. Not well.
Best wishes for your future life.

Of course not, Stu. You moan, as we all do from time to time.
But you don't *just* moan, you actually talk about hifi, music etc.
And I sent you a nice pic from Kew!

An only partially correct statement.
If as you assert it is for the benefit of those interested in NAIM, does that mean we (those interested) dare not allowed to talk about anything else?
I don't think that is how NAIM see it otherwise why would they provide a forum designed not to talk about NAIM ?
If they take the Padded Cell away maybe that will signal they don't want anything else talked about.
I think they will keep the Music room though, because apparently it is what we are supposed to play on this equipment,as opposed to just talk about how good or bad it is or where in the room it is.

Its just that a few weeks back I detected a really nasty, snide tone from some posters. The odd little dig is one thing, but sustained hostility - as I saw it - really is not nice. Have a look at recent posts by some people ( no names, you can work it out ). I do think that, all too often, people just have to keep posting regardless of the effect it might have on others. Have a look at the pack bullying of Sniper. Really not nice at all.
I've asked for a return to civility; I've mentioned the snide tone more than once previously and the some empty people have taken umbrage. Maybe I've become less tolerant of fools over time but too often the kind of behaviour I see here leads to real animosity. Like I said elsewhere, young people I have trained have been injured on operations and are now facing the Talib in Afghanistan. Maybe that is stressing me, I know that I really have become fed up with some of the fools dragging this place down. There is enough shit in my life already without having to deal with clots on the internet, so I've placed three stooges on my ignore list. Remove the trigger, and I'll not need to point out that in some circumstances, the Emporer Has No Clothes. I'm usually right, though.
151 - you are not helping.
Howard - People can say whay they want,of course, but being old-fashioned as I am, I think it slightly odd when people forget to post about music, hifi kit and Naim in particular on the Naim forum. Stroppy responses when that is pointed out reinforce my view.
Anyway, I listened to some Kate Bush earlier; sublime.
