What's it do that Vista doesn't? Is it worth the trouble?
Please compare and contrast 'worth' vs 'trouble' after your experience
Thanks!

vista:
-very slow
-very unreliable
-painfully laid out
-unstable
-very hardware reliant
Windows 7
-not quite so slow
-seems very reliable so far
-much nicer interface, everything to hand
-had absolutely no driver or stability issues so far
-seems to run on much lower spec hardware
simple answer... buy windows 7 and forget you ever saw vista

I'll probably give it go fairly soon - sounds promising Shrink. Thanks.

I am enjoying a bunch....
Seemless and fast. Having a few issues with a couple programs that need to be updated for W7.
It really seems to be rock solid. The install was as easy as pie. Network, email, wireless, drivers were almost 100 percent either on the OS or were automatically
loaded from Mic.com...
Impressive.

My Vista has been lightning fast since the day I got it. Problem was that you need to run 3gig to get the best from it. Most Laptops were shifted by companies with only 1 gig when it was launched and were still doing the same last year.
Hopeless.
In saying that I will be moving over to Windows 7 in a shortwhile.

You're starting to get a sense of the MAC ownership experience over the past 20 years. Apple certainly seem to take the upgrade seriously. They are using new ads to target the move to Windows 7 as the perfect time to change platforms as I guess 7 is not backward compatible with previous versions of Windows. Losing that backward compatibility will ultimately be a good thing if you're a Windows user. Also goes to show, if you copy the efforts of others long enough, eventually you might get it right.

Work! according to reports so far.
One of the main things is that Microsoft have tested it with a range of hardware and software, as opposed to Vista which was just useless at dealing with drivers for external devices, and also had some nasty spyware like elements, particularly for audio. This is what I have heard.
It will be interesting to see if it is better than XP, and obviously not as good as UNIX.

Upgraded two of my vista media PCs (Full install) and it's much better than vista. Minor issue of it installing the wrong video driver on one machine when it updated over the net.
Next my work horse XP PC that I'm not looking forward to as will need to reinstall loads.

Good to hear, Stuart. What, in particular, is better?

If XP is doing the job, wait for a while at least.

And while waiting check you backups and take a few more. You never know if the install process will zark you machine or not.

I've use W7 beta & RC for several months, and it's run faster & cleaner than XP on the same PC.
I really want to put it on my main PC, but I've lost a couple of CDs with programs I don't want to lose. :-(

I am surprised that "windoze" 7 works for you
. My son, a PC expert, yesterday did a clean install of 64-bit windoze 7 professional with all latest online updates for his Dell desktop, and the results - it gets worse than vista 32 bit. The video playback becomes jerky, keyboard input lags noticeably behind key strokes, blue screen when desktop background gets changed. Obviously, he's got confused why there are such issues.

This amuses me.
My own experiences of Windows 7 are the same as Phil's. Ran the beta and RC all year and have had no real problems.

Yes, it is amusing because the wording is intentional

Equally amusing. I'm guessing the 'expert' honorific was relative.
Stuck it on a week ago. Better sound than I've ever had before, equal best video picture too and this straight out of the box with none of the old fussing around. I've got an extra octave in the bass department and the DVD picture in Media Centre defaults to decoding and post processing in hardware if it's there. I used to build scary filter graphs to get that to happen with nVidia PureVideo under XP.
Enjoying the Desktop UI too. In fact, I got a Mac itch around the time of OS X but had security concerns and didn't want to duplicate or delegate choice of hardware. Win 7 just scratched that itch.

Peter, drivers are the responsibility of the hardware manufacturer - this wasn't a Windows problem.
Be aware that Dell cut every corner they find, their product is cheap in every sense of the word. Cheap tin 'n chips isn't something you get clever with or try to keep for any length of time. Or try to move to a 64 bit architecture.
Replacement graphics cards cost 30 quid and come with drivers and 64 bit isn't ripe for general use. This simply wasn't a Windows problem.

C

It's a very good point. Out of interest I ran the Windows 7 upgrade advisor thing yesterday (wondering what it would say about my Win 7 system). It did occur to me that it should have asked at the start if I wanted to check for 32 or 64 bit.
