What or who, are the albums and performers you surreptitiously check out prospective romantic/ close friends with?

I mean John Martyn (Solid air, One World, Bless the Weather), Nick Drake, Tim Buckley, i've found if a lover appreciates/likes these artists during private moments of tenderness we tend to get on well if not we seemingly just dont gel.

My wife passed a Kraftwerk, Camel, DSOTM, test with flying colours - in fact she went one better and said "Peter, it's not loud enough.".

23 years later we are still listening.

I find that the women to whom I'm attracted generally have atrocious taste in music. The ones I know with good taste are usually A) involved with someone else, or B) not attractive to me.

I've never been married.

In the 20yrs we have known each other I'd guess my wife has bought 5 CD's at most for herself. If I did not buy music I'm not sure she would.

She does listen lots though, but not with the same intensity or interest. Prefers the radio!

I read Bruce's and Blueknowz's replies with a wry smile. This pretty much matches my experience. My wife is completely indifferent to my enthusiastic ramblings on: how great that guitar solo was; or how amazing those vocals are etc etc. And everything is always too loud.

The albums actually bought by the wife, in 19 years are:
Eagles Greatest Hits
Michael Jackson - Bad
Whitney Houston - Whitney
Shania Twain - Come on Over.

My girlfriend had to enter an intensive course of therapy to wean her off 'Texas'. I have her now singing along to steely dan and Kraftwork and she has learnt to appreciate John Martyn as well.

I am happy for her to have independent taste to me but Texas? - there are limits Winker

I'd almost rather live with a Republican than live with that music.

What snobs we are

Reminds me of my first wife, who thought she was the only person in the world with good taste (apart from people who were obviously clones of herself) and looked down her nose at everything.

Music is music. You like what you like and you don’t what you don’t. John Martyn, for example, for me is the most untalented, overrated, intensely boring artists ever to have lived. Does that mean I have to look UP my nose at you lot?

My partner and I have a bizzarely similar musical lifeline which we only found out after we'd started seeing eachother. 80's indie music, Irish and American folk/country, etc etc etc.

She was a massive Joy Division fan at school and has some fantastic tapes of local/pirate radio at the time with Joy Division, early Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, New FADS, 808 State etc etc. with Terry Christian, Jon Ronson and Craig Cash DJing.

Zappa.

Sadly, I didn't follow my own rule with the fine lady that ended up as my wife, and it's become a bone of contention, so to speak. I have my private Zappa stash, and she will leave the room if anything in said stash is used.
