Raising Sand - Is this well recorded?

Posted by: Tuk on 25 March 2009

Just bought the Raising Sand album by AK and RP but a bit disappointed by the recording quality - vocals seem a bit strained and the bass seems heavy and ill defined somehow. Tried it through my 5i combo and my main CDX2/202/200 with similar results. Is the recording good??

There was talk about the original vinyl release not being up to par. It was later redone and the results were positive. I bought the later vinyl release and it sounds pretty good to me.

I'll admit to being slightly disappointed in the recording quality. I think I was expecting one of those discs that really blows you away. It's OK, but just not quite up to (high) expectations.

Thats what i thought - just using the CD version at the moment but does seem slightly compressed and lacking through quality kit. The curse of modern producing claims another victim. Frown

Recording is not good IMHO. Maybe the excuse is that it is recorded for the ipod generation. Sounds poor on my ipod as well even with my etymotics - distorts very easily - shame. I rarely listen to it as a result.

I have the original LP and agree that the quality is not up to par. However I would suggest that as far as the CD goes - the sound is largely what the producer (T-Bone Burnett) intended. He is known to dislike bright/overly compressed recordings and his more recent productions have tended to be 'more organic' and 'old school' in their production style.

Is the recording good? NO! and from this side of the fence, the music isn't either...but my goofy friends like it, so what do I know...

I have liked what I've heard off the new Tom Rush, Emmylou Harris release...

Just got the latest vinyl issue;optimised/ mastered for vinyl. Sounds pretty good. Not as good as some . . . . . no worse than others.

I agree with what Tuk says regarding the bass. Kind of heavy handed in the mix.

There's a few good songs on this album. Definitely have to give a few more listening sessions, and mine for other good songs that should turn up.

Must admit, I do like this album - great vocal gig by both of them, good songs. Imo.

I've only got the cd, but it sounds fine to me...bass is full (but that never bothers me). I would say it's a little muddy and soft - but I'll take that over compressed, thin and bass light anyday.

His older stuff is very good, when he was in that band...The Honeydrippers Winker

I think it's a pretty decent recording. Sounds more like a live recording than a studio one.
The bass is a tad loose but goes down rather low. Check the start of Trampled Rose.
There's nothing like a good live performance to get the chest banging in time with the beat though.

I think it's quite decent for being something that's recorded in this millenium and is meant to be a 'pop' record. 98% of all other pop records made today is worse, in my experience. On the other hand, 98% of all pop records made in, let's say, the 1970's are better Winker

Musically I find the heavy plowing bass, mentioned earlier in this thread, quite tiresome, though, together with the half wispering vocal style used on most tracks. I'm a bit dissapointed as I think that booth singers has done much better on other ocassions.

LZ 1 or AK & US live for me!

I have the later vinyl, btw.

I've got the vinyl. Not sure if it's an original release, but it's not the best of recordings. The bass is indeed very heavy and kind of ill-defined.

Good vocal performances though and mostly good songs.

Thanks for your comments! A real shame that it is of questionable quality - should i just sell my Naim kit and get a mobile phone for music instead??!

Sound quality average, album a bit dull for me.

This lp has probably been my most popular test record. Piercing Krauss highs and a fat bottom, what more could a man dream of? Before my Keel, it sounded like the noise a bloated diving pig would make if it had not done enough deco. Once the Keel had been fitted, I was amazed to find how much detail was going on in the bass swill. It now sounded like an instrument was playing and not just a deep wallow in the mud.

Now she's not screaming and the bottom not flabby. Oh well, you can't have it all.

Actually, I do like Beyonce, not sure if she squeals though.

Another great record that fell victim to the loudness war - very sad.
