Headline powered from Nait5?

Does anyone know if it is possible to power the Headline headphone amp from the Nait5 Aux2 port?

The Nait 5 manual states that this port is for powering a prefix or stageline. The connections guide on the Naim website says a Headline can be powered either by a Napsc or a Hicap.
If you're asking has anyone tried going outside of these guidelines and experimented with a Headline powered from the Aux 2 port, I'm afraid I don't know.
Anyone tried this? Is it possible?

You could probably do it with a SLIC. The Headline would have two connections to the Nait5: one for audio using the tape loop, and another for power using the SLIC and Aux2.

I power my Healine 2 from the Aux 2 port on my 112. I would imagine this is the same on a Nait 5 (??)

I've just taken a loan of a Headline and can confirm it works straight off a Nait.

Does this apply to the headline (original) and headline 2?
How much does the slic to connect the headline to a nait cost? Would the same slic work between a headline and Flatcap 2?
I'm currently using a napsc to power my Headline. Is this a better option than using the nait's Aux 2 port?

Both.

Yes.

Well, a Headline sounds much better when powered by a *-cap versus an NAPSC, so I would say yes. However, remember that your Flat-Cap2 will be powering two devices at that point, which will rob a bit of the performance from your pre-amp. I suspect that it would sound better overall, but you'll have to try to know for sure.

Thanks for your replies Mike.

As regards the issue of earth loops mentioned by Richard Dane, are these a bad thing per se, or only if it affects the sound you perceive?

the whole idea of earthing is a science in itself. I'm an electrical engineer but interested in electronics (the latter counting for more than the pointless qualification) - earth loops are bad in electronic principal. If you have an earth loop, you work it so you don't. Regardless of the application.

Not to discredit the Naim or anything but given the rather (dare I say it) anal way that the headline requires an external PSU I'd just go for a Rega Ear! To that end I will be doing when I move back in with my parents or with some woman or something! I know the headline is cracking. But even the best (at least most expensive) grado headphones I heard were nothing compared to speakers! Not worth the sacrifice of a stack of CDs anyway!

Sorry, I digressed into opinion there. Of course some people will already have PSUs. I wouldn't be so bothered then! Just wouldn't get one for the headphones alone though!
