Guess the problem

Despite an earlier posting on whether my CD3 was on its way out (Problem solved by levelling the player which was miles out!) it has finally conked out over Christmas and is on its way back to the factory today.
I wonder if anyone can predict what is likely to be wrong from the following description + how much this could cost to fix?
The player cannot be heard at all despite the amp inputs and cables being checked and OK. It is still recognising discs and showing the number of tracks and even spins the disc and displays which track is playing/time gone etc. It was fine last time it was used and has not been bumped, moved etc since.
I assume this isn't the laser or transport from the above symptoms.
Any ideas. S'ppose I'll find out soon enough but I don't want to think it has passed to the other side just yet.
