i just bought a pair of s/h epos m12's and im not duly impressed with their sound. they just dont seem very "live" to me??? the only other speakers i auditioned in my system were proac tablettes and i thought they were nice although a bit bright up top and somewhat fatiguing... any thoughts gents?
thanks,
colin
ps.. everyone recommnds these... tell me what makes them so endearing in the opinion of most...

what stands are they on? pulled the plastic ring from around the tweeter and snug up the screws ....pop out the plastic caps from the edges of the baffle and give them a try get them snug and then go about a half turn....and if you want to go on you can take the baffle out and replace the 2 uf cap with a solen cap or better one even...get rid of the metal jumpers and replace with good wire...

they are on the factory epos stands with the spikes lightly into the speaker cabinets... everthing is level and stable, it just sounds plain dull and uninvolving much like a boombox...
i tried taking out the flatcap2 and it got REAL UGLY real fast...
i tried just now the recommended tweaks with a minimal effect overall...
cant do anything right now about the lack of F-type connectors on the speaker end as all i have right now are the factory jumpers... does it help/hurt to have the power going in a specific driver?
otherwide id rather just dich 'em without going through the trouble of swapping caps and stuff...
can anyone tell me how the sound of the intro/credo is compared to the epos? i seem to remember the naim's being much more revealing and dynamic... whereas these seem to be congested and veiled...
needless to say im dissapointed in their performance...

try pluging into the top binding post....if you are still not happy sell them ,they are a good speaker for the money but there is better....try a pair of Neats
Posted on: 17 April 2003 by onlythat
are you sure they're fully broken in??? Most speakers, (including my NEATs) sucked before they were broken in.
Posted on: 17 April 2003 by colinjay
the look like they have been used quite a bit, so i would assume that they are broken in??....

Sorry to state the obvious but, are the tweeters working?
You need a test disc with selected frequencies. If so; be very careful with the volume at the top end. Very easy to fry tweeters (if they aren't already!) Just loud enough to hear is about right.
Even if you are 'mature', you should still hear something up to around 15 kHz.
I've just heard the new little Epos ELS 3's at £200 a pair in the UK, and they sound bloody amazing (on good stands).
Good luck.

About two months ago I also gave the Epos sound a try. I had been looking for new speakers for some time.
They didn't sound like I expected them too either. They were a used pair of M15's, and in my system they sounded congested, slow, and (most strange of all) the tweeter did not seem to be well integrated with the woofer. I was must unimpressed, and moved them along almost as quickly as I had moved them in.

Hi colinjay,
Used to have ES14's a while back and they sounded best with the foam bungs removed. Much faster and more open. If your 12's have bungs in the ports try removing them.

If the Proac Tablettes are the only other speakers you have heard in your sistem, I presume that they will be used as the 'reference' or 'benchmark' for the Epos as well as other speakers? So the M12 sounded 'dull' or 'lifeless' compared to the Tablette?
What are the partnering equipment and your room size? Oh, and what music? ;]

my system (also in my profile) is:
CD5
FLATCAP2
STAGELINE
REGA P2 w/BIAS
NAIT5
EPOS M12's (for now)
ive listened to NAIM speakers (credos, intros and SBL's) as i used to sell NAIM gear, but this is my first system that i have owned as i have been out of the loop for a while...
maybe im just used to the naim speaker sound which as i remember is a lot more forward and has more air and space around the music and does a good job at reproducing the ambience of the recording as well as being remarkably fast and often ruthless...
i guess i just have the wrong speaker for what i am looking to accomplish?
or am i lacking on the amplication end...
certianly my digital source could not be said to be lacking???
on the analogue front, it actually sounds a bit better although most of my albums are not so stellar live recordings from the 60's and 70's...

Colin,
I believe its your expectations. I heard a pair of passive SBLs a month ago. They made my M12s sound much slower -- the bass from the SBLs is a killer. Not that I am about to dump the M12s. They're doing a pretty job in my sistem.

m12's aren't forward. They're not quite laid back but they are very involving. That said, I ahve only ever used them blutacced to their stands, never with the upward facing spikes which could givethem a very different presentatin. I suggest blutac. If you're still unhappy, you may well have to consider a change. Oh, and if you must toe them in, then only toe in very slightly. Start from the square position and angle them only slightly if needed.
