Top Ten Al***s of 1978

Posted by: Sloop John B on 16 June 2006

For no other reason than I'm stick in a moment that I can't get out of.

77-81 the best years in pop/rock music?

1978 the tracks you grooved to then or in retrospect.

Here's my 10

1. Boomtown Rats - A Tonic for the Troops
Ireland has many start points for the Celtic Tiger. When a country who leached a generation became a country of net immigration. For many it was when Bob Geldof tore up a picture of Olivia Newton John and John Travolta on TOTP's when they performed Rat Trap which had knocked it off No.1.

2. Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous

Are you ready to rock?

3. Blondie - Parallel Lines

4. Patti Smith Group - Easter

Who did you love Debbie or Patti?

5. Police - Outlandos D'Amour

6. Rory Gallagher - Photofinish

7. Elvis Costello - This Years Model

8. Talking Head - More Songs about Buildings and food

9. Horslips - The man who built America
I misheard this as the "nun" who built America and thought it was a very unusual title.

10. Dire Straits - Dire Straits

5 minute 10 song collection, I'm sure I've forgotten loads. Anyone else out there have 10 form 1978?

I can't remember which albums were 76, 77, 78 or 79 - so if I'm in the wrong year then I apologise

I like most of the albums in your top 10, SJB, there are only two artist you've chosen that are not for me (I'm sure you can guess which two), but the other eight are in my collection or should be.

  • Crossing the Red Sea with the Adverts - The Adverts
  • Only Human - Amon Düül II
  • Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) - Captain Beefheart
  • Give 'Em Enough Rope - The Clash
  • Lionheart - Kate Bush
  • Dynamite Daze - Kevin Coyne
  • The Man Machine - Kraftwerk
  • For as Many as Will - Shirley and Dolly Collins
  • Black and White - The Stranglers
  • The Scream - Susie and the Banshees
  • V2 - Vibrators

These are in no order and are not necessarily the 11 best albums of 78, but I think they were all released in 78 and I like all of them. I felt there should be more punk, but I think that was 76/7 - and there was some dreary stuff in 78 too: seem to remember John Travolta being around that time and the once great Bee Gees decending in to dross (or is that just jive talkin').

Bill Grundy by the TV Personalities and Remorse Code by the Desperate Bicycles weren't out till 79.

FWIW, I preferred Daborah Harry to Patti Smith - though I have more albums by Patti, but I preferred Martha & the Muffins to both, but that was a couple of years later. When were the B52s?

I have a strange feeling that although I remember 1978 very very well many people (possibly excepting those e.g. spending excessive money on Naim equipment because of past quality reputation) don't give a ..... about 1978, as they were born c. 1986.

I confess to having 10 of last poster's listing on LP or revised CD.

Is it an age thing then? I'm a child of the 60's and could have done 30 or 40 from '78 alone. The '70's for better or worse were the formative years for my music tastes (possibly why I always wear a big top hat with mirrors on?).

1978 (aged 14) was a great year for my musical adventure.

These aren't all 1978 albums as such, but THREE important discoveries to me that year (which continue on as regular discs on the t/t or cdp):

1) Nick Drake (four years after his death, still very obscure) Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter, Pink Moon.

2) Rory Gallagher Photofinish together with Calling Card (his previous album) - and going to see him for the first time. My live music awakening!

3) Elgar Dream of Gerontius - I sang tenor in a school (yes, school) production.

1978 was a rather good year, because room for experiment was on the way back. 1979 was even better as a whole. In 1980 it all became a bit more mainstream again.

OK, then here are some 1978 records from my collection. I bought most of them second hand in the Ninetees I have to admit, as I was a very poor student in 78.

Buzzcocks - Love Bites
Wire - Chairs Missing
Electric Chairs - Electric Chairs
Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance
The Residents - Not Available
Brian Eno - Music for Films
Henry Cow - Western Culture
Only Ones - Only Ones

Willem

Oh, eh, Patti of course!
