B&Q come up trumps

Posted by: Rasher on 17 May 2003

Spent my Saturday re-wiring the kitchen lighting & needed some cabling pretty quick. Dashed off to B&Q and what do I find? MK switchless sockets at only £4 each! I couldn't find these at my local eletrical wholesalers as they tend to do cheap trade stuff, and the only other ones I have come across have ben from HiFiforsale.com, at something like £10 each. Bargain.

Can I also suggest Farnell, Maplin and RS for you sheltered people!

rswww.com
www.farnell.co.uk
www.maplin.co.uk

they generally have everything - without the markup!

...Well CPC sell the 2 gang switchless MK (Logic Plus) for £5.04 plus VAT each, and they (tend) to be cheaper than Farnell (yup - just checked - 2 gang unswitched = £5.49 + VAT at Farnell). I've found B&Q cheapest for MK Toughplugs, too.
I don't suppose B&Q are doing the "old" style MK sockets, are they?

I should add, though, that RS, Farnell, CPC and sometimes Maplin DO have excellent prices for a wide range of other stuff - just not MK gear, it seems!

Hi chaps,

Woops, pressed wrong button,

Ive just bought a double unswitched MK socket and a couple of MK plugs from B&Q also.
As I live in a rented house I cant justify a dedicated mains supply, but I remember reading a thread some weeks ago where someone used a extention lead from the cooker switch with some success.
As my system is in a spare bedroom right next to the airing cupboard I put a (MK!) junction box before the immersion heater switch and took a supply through the wall into a surfice mounted box. That way I can remove and redecorate when I leave.
The differance it has made has been amazing, mostly in the bass region. The bloom from my LP12/Ittok3 has been greatly reduced and the sound is much cleaner at high volumes.
My only concern, and one I didnt consider when I bought the switches, is that the valhala is now powered up all the time, (unless I pull out the plug), does this matter?

You can do it if you B&Q it!!!

Hi, yeah, CPC are good. But farnell do offer free delivery on orders over £10 and are generally less fussy than the others when dealing with non trade/business customers.

Though... as I reach for my CPC catalogue I do confirm my suspicions that CPC is infact part of Farnell! Now both of us are gonna have a hard time working that one out!

As always - it's a socket! Get it as cheap as you can! I was just trying to push the boat into the water. Either way, not gonna let Mr Andrews have £20 for one of the beggars!

I don't understand the relationship between CPC and Farnell either.
I didn't realise the free delivery level was only £10 from Farnell - well worth knowing. Such a pain of a website to navigate, though!

Yes... an awful website it is. Though they will send you free catalogues!

I'm making a short shopping list for when I move into my new house in july!

I didn’t know farnells min was £10 either thank’s, one thing to watch with cpc is the multiple entries of the same item at different prices! and also the special offers flyer, annoys me no end ( they don’t tell you it’s on offer over the phone, just try to sell you some batteries).

Went to Maplins (B'ham) yesterday, just cheap trade stuff in store and in their catalogue - no MK to be seen.

Yes, Maplins is no good for MK type stuff. I got some unswitched MK sockets from a B&Q superstore (not Warehouse) ysterday, and they were (IIRC) £4.84. I bet Rasher used a B&Q warehouse - how they justify the difference in price I don't know. Still, they had them!

Mappers did used to sell MK, I have MK bits that I bought from there!

the difference in price is justified because your average tradesman/engineer or whatever gets a nice little account which means he doesn't have to pay until he's been paid. And of course the customer pays for the bits anyway! also they deliver to the door!

Harsh but true!

Olly - Maplins is the holiday camp from hi de hi. I believe I directed you to Maplin! Razz
It's unlikely holiday camps will be distributors of fine electrical products!

Even so, yeah. They're going downhill a bit these days for non consumer stuff but they have city centre stores which means you can hop in whilst you're doing your shopping. I live 200 yards from one and I'm in there at least once a week!

No it was the local superstore, but having checked my invoice which is STILL in my wallet, I did actually pay £4.84. I apologise.
