La Traviata Live from Covent Garden

Posted by: Frank Abela on 29 June 2009

Hi there,

Tomorrow evening (UK), La Traviata is being broadcast live to many cinemas in the UK and I believe it's being broadcast on Sky. The main protagonists are played by Renee Fleming and Joseph Calleja so it shouild be a 1st class performance. I'm going to watch it at the local VUE cinema and just bought the tickets so I suspect you may be able to get some too if you have the opportunity. I believe it may also be screened free of charge in some parks (e.g. Hyde Park if memory serves), sponsored by BP. You should be able to find more info by googling La Traviata Live.

Sorry, I've searched the sites and all I can find are the big screen spectaculars and the cinema viewings which you can see here:

Hoping this doesn't break any rules...

For those who missed it, we thought it was simply marvellous. We were a little concerned about it being in a cinema but there was a real feeling of the 'liveness' of the transmission and the protagonists were in fine voice.

If you've not tried these live transmissions I think they're worth a punt.

It was available in HD throughout Europe on the Intelsat 905 satellite positioned at 24.5°W free to air.

I had no difficulty in picking the signal up on my steerable 80cm dish here in East Anglia UK.
