Nait 2 and Inputs
Posted by: Taylormade on 11 October 2003
Is it not possible to use the tape, tuner, or aux inputs on the Nait 2 for a CD Player?
I now have a CD3 which goes into the CD input, and when I plugged my DVD player/DAC combo into the other inputs, the sound is either too loud as with the tuner input or too low as with either the aux or tape input.
Is this normal? What's the point of an aux input if it can't be used for an auxillary device such as a second cd player? I'm using din-to-rca with the cd3 because of the 2m length I need for now. Even if I were to use a Din/Din cable, it doesn't seem that the CD3 would work in the tuner, aux, or tape input.

Hi there in the US of A.
I'm not that familiar with the Nait 2, but your problem may not be as odd as you think.
I think I'm correct in saying that the CD input will be a line input level board (i.e. unity gain ), whereas the Aux may not be (you need to check this on your instruction book if you have one).
I'm pretty sure that the tuner input will be a very low sensitivity board (i.e. can accept very low signal levels), so you don't want to use that one, and the tape input will alsmost certainly have a buffer stage.
I don't think that the above observations prevent you from actually using these inputs, but obviously with a CD plugged into the CD input, whatever volume level you are using at the time will be applied to the selected input when you switch.
Have you owned the Nait from new ?? or is this a S/H one that may have been 'tinkered with' ??
Hope someone else can help you here as I am only guessing.
Mike

I think what you're saying makes sense. What I'll probably have to do is see if I can have the aux input converted to a line level input by NANA.
I'm the original owner of the Nait so nothing has been done to it.
Perhaps this would be a good time to have it recapped as well.

Hi Taylormade
I'm not a 100% sure but I believe that the Aux and CD inputs had the identical sensitivity and therefore should be at the same level when the cables from your CD are swapped over. Looks as though someone has changed the sensitivity of one of the inputs in the past.

It must have come from Naim with decreased sensitivity on the Aux input then. I had only used the line out from a TV into the AUX input and always thought it wasn't loud enough. I guess I assumed that was just the way the Line Out on a television was designed. Now I realize that the AUX input is just too low.
Is there a way to change the sensitivity myself or will I need to send it to NANA?
Thanks!

oops...i think i got my story screwed up.
In re-examining the situation, I have now determined that the tuner/aux and tape inputs are much more sensitive than the CD input and those inputs are all louder than the CD.
Normal listening level on CD would be at the 9 o'clock position but with the DVD going through the AUX, the volume is at 7:30 or so.
Also, even with the volume turned down all the way, I can still hear the DVD source plugged into the AUX.
This does not occur with the CD input.
Is this normal or will this harm the system?

Hi Taylormade,
Looks like your Nait may need to go in for a service, always advisable for amps over ten years old. I would definitely mention your problem to NANA, as I think that the AUX and CD inputs should have the same or very similar sensitivity.
I used to have a NAC 62 pre-amp, which did not have a dedicated CD input, and I used the AUX input for CD when I got one. I dont recall having to change the volume significantly when switching between record deck, and AUX, so there may be a problem with your AUX or CD input.
Get it checked out is the simple answer, but I don't think you will do any harm to your system in the meantime.
Good Luck
Mike

Except I have the phono option on my NAIT 2. The inputs are a bit too sensitive for CD's. This is fixed for the CD input. I use the tuner for my CD so you could do the same for your DVD. I also use the tape input for my DVD and parasound external phono into AUX. It aLL WORKS GOOD.
On another note I wish people would stop crying recapp for every minor question.
My NAIT 2 and 62/140 work great at 15 years. There is undoubtably some improvement to be had with a recapp but hardly enough to say that the eqipment is broken.
NAIM is built to last and that is what it will do and rarely is servicing likely to make improvements on the scale that the unit will seem like it was broken before hand.

Hi!
I run a Nait 2 (recently recapped) in the office, and mine doesn´t even have a CD input. Maybe this came on the later ones? I have AUX, PHONO, TUNER and TAPE and I run a tuner in TUNER and an iPod in AUX.
I also have this "leaking sound" problem = I can hear the tuner signal if I switch to AUX or TAPE...
Must say that I´m really impressed with this little fellow, too bad the new 5i isn´t put into one of those half size boxes...

Thank you to all that replied.
My Nait 2 was one of the late models that was ordered to have a CD input when "phono" was selected.
I'll email NANA and see what the scoop is regarding the difference in sensitivity of the inputs.
