Credo V.S Kitten - The Kitten is going to win!
Posted by: jamesfuge on 01 September 2008
help me! i have a mint pair of dark wood credo's here at home, and i love them to pieces. My girlfriend however, has also recently aquired a 12 week old little kitten named ellie. sounds gud so far? the issue is that whenever i play music, she claws away at the veneer and the grilles. How do i stop this? Has anyone else battled with this issue, or have they just got rid of the cat? Cheers

Not had this specific problem, but my cat's bad behaviours when it was a kitten were effectively deterred by being chucked out of the back door by my father and left in the garden for an hour as soon as she did something wrong! Seemed a bit harsh to me at the time, but she's still about (13 now I think) and doesn't use carpet as a toilet or furniture as a scratching post!

ah ok, ill try something like that, maybe not outside, but put her in the bedroom or something!

pick the cat up, hold it firmly, and blow in its face, then put it down gently, if it hasn't already jumped out of your hand and made with the legs.

Get yourself a corrugated cardboard scratching wedge, such as the Cosmic Catnip Alpine Scratcher, available at most online et stores (and, I believe, also in the U.K.).
Kittens are eminently trainable, older cats a bit more intractable.

Squirt gun or similar. Cats hate water. Usually after a couple of squirts, the mere sight of the gun will make them scamper.
By far the best method I have found, and harmless.

Crank up some AC/DC as soon as cat gets near them. Angus should sort things out with a solo and some feed back!

Gently pull little Ellie's claws out with pliers.
On second thoughts the water trick works very well too..

Hi James,
Believe it or not, I managed to teach my cat a few years ago after the terrifying sight of him stretching on hind legs and clawing at my new speakers' grills.
What I did was place 2 inch wide masking tape sticky side up all around the hifi and speakers, about 12 inches away, or wherever you don't want the cat to go. You can make the long runs more manageable by putting shorter lengths end to end. Bend the tape over a few inches from each end so you can stick the tape to the floor. You just leave the whole lot down for a few days, weeks or months depending how confident you feel to take it up.
The cat will stay away and will hate getting his paws stuck on the tape if he gets too close, I guess the experience really sticks in their cat memory.
Give it a try - nothing to loose. This has worked in my case for 5 years now, I always put the tape back down if I move the system, just in case.
Jeremy
PS How is the Joiners Arms these days?

Says more about you than the cats.
David's suggestion for a scratching post of it's own would help. The water therapy as a fall back.

Yes but sometimes they will still have a scratch. I just live with it. The wood polishes up ok. and I keep a spare pair of grilles for posh company.

Yup, I detest animals that kill for the fun of it, but that's just me. Do you want to come and clear up my lawn of cat sh!t before I mow it? At least they don't do it in their owner's garden, so that's ok then....

You probably detest a fair few humans then!

I would post a link to my solution on HTguide but the site appears to be down at present.
I have used some of that chunky plastic lattice stuff that you put around tomato plants, made a simple hoop and stuck it around the speakers. 18 months and not a blemish or scratch.
RE the cat haters - I think it is curious that no other domestic animal generates such irrational hatred which seems to be generally tolerated. The link between violence towards animals and violent offenders is documented in psychology literature, but that is at the extreme. Most cat haters are content with making anti-social comments to people that appreciate the animals.

Well it would be pretty useless aiming it towards the cats.....

Anyway, enough about cat hating, as you can tell I don't own a cat so can't offer any advice from experience, but back to the question posed, what about something that the cat doesn't like the smell of placed around the speaker?

Christmas cracker psychology 101.
Also if you have fucking cat make it shit on your property. My physiology is the cat owners don't give a crap about other people they just give crap (cat).

Humans are the only "animals" who kill for the fun of it. Animals kill for instinctual reasons.
