Tagging WAVs
Posted by: Paul Hannan on 05 December 2009
Hi
Following some issues with ripping a couple of CDs with XLD, I have had to rip a couple using iTunes to WAV. Clearly this won't enable me to include tags automatically on the files, however is there a way to post-process them? I'd like the difference between flac/wav encoded files to be seamless to the Uniti.
Many thanks
Paul

AFAIK WAV files do not hold tags.
Best convert the WAV's to FLAC and tag the FLAC's

No real reason to use WAVs with itunes so I would suggest conversion to either apple lossless or use XLD to import as flac.

Can the NaimUnity play back ALAC?

Well, depends...
Looks like it only does so from an attached iPod
From Unity product description:
quote:Audio files supported
Internet radio (WMA, MP3 Streams, MMS)
Playlists (M3U, PLS)
MP3, AAC (up to 320 kbps, CBR/VBR)
Apple Lossless (from iPod)
Windows Media–formatted content (up to 320 kbps)
WAV, FLAC, OGG Vorbis

You can use a server program that converts ALAC to Wav on the fly. Otherwise it won't play the files directly.

If you have a PC, it's easy as WM or MM etc will find and attach. Don't know about MAC. They've purposely ignored WAV. Wav doesn't have an ID3 setup but does have some RIFF tagging. I find most programs outside of Itunes and Foobar do fine with wav.quote:Originally posted by Paul Hannan:

Use FLAC uniti plays flac no problem, XLD converts FLAC no problem, you can tag FLAC no problem.
So no problem then.
So no problem then.

There may be one if he uses Itunes and MAC which must be the case with XLD.

I think the original poster said he used a NaimUnity - in which case FLAC is good.
If using Mac and iTunes then WAV isn't a very good choice due to the limited support for WAV in iTunes. For iTunes use either ALAC or AIFF.

Exactly what I was getting at. He's got a MAC and almost by default uses Itunes which doesn't support FLAC. It's fine to rip Flac to a folder for the Uniti but I suspect he's looking to have an organized library for both the uniti and Itunes but I could be mistaken about that. I think you can get Windows Media Player for MAC. I've never seen that version but it may organize and hold tags for wav. Of course it may also just be a streamlined WMA player.
That said, I'm almost positive that the Uniti will play AIFF and ALAC via stream so this is all moot if he just uses those full and lossless formats with MAC. I believe the description of Uniti format capabilities as given by Naim is a bit off or should have been updated at it's introduction.

Hi, I'm using FLAC for my music files. I've only used iTunes to create a WAV file as XLD wouldn't rip the CD. iTunes seems to be much less fussy. I now have a selection of mostly FLAC with a couple of WAV files. I'd be happy to convert the CDs that iTunes couln'd read to Apple lossless fisrt if I could then use XLD to convert them to FLAC. Alteratively I have ran the WAV files through XLD. This has converted them to FLAC but how do I add tags???
Many thanks for your input

Use something like songbird, but its gonna be a slow process, you would be better of re-ripping.

This little program for Mac looks like a nice program to add all the relevant tags manually.
It is called Tag, can handle most types of audio files
quote:Tag is a metadata editor for FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Monkey's Audio and WavPack files.
and is freeware.

'Tag' worked very well, many thanks. Its a good approach for dealing with exceptions where XLD can't create a rip directly

Can I use this to edit my HDX exported WAV files?

I don't think Tag supports tagging wav-files.
Tagging wav files is a bit of a pain in the ***.
It doesn't have a widely supported standard for tags. Nowadays wav is tagged using RIFF INFO_List tags.
But there aren't many tools supporting these.
So if you can tag them using tool A, your player B might not be able to read them.
Converting to another lossless format is easiest.

It's not bad in WM or MM but Itunes is another story.

I used XLD to import into FLAC and then TAG to complete the Artist/CD tiles tags

The very real reason to rip to WAV in Itunes is that the music sounds better on an IPOD than the "lossless" versions. It also sounds better when played back via a PC to an external hifi system.
However, as the OP says Itunes does not tag wav files as such and I have lost all the "tags" or associations on a couple of occasions following Itunes updates. I have reluctantly had to re-rip my cd collection using DBPoweramp which at east allows multi encoding to different file locations. It also offers a secure rip which is possibly better than the ITunes quick rip.
I have opted to rip to WAV,FLAC and AAC versions all ripped simultaneously to an external hard drive which I have also got on auto back up,
I will just have to put up with poorer SQ on my IPOD!
