CDSII "Ticking" sound
Posted by: Nan on 01 April 2003
I took delivery of my new CDS2 on 28/3/03. I'm experiencing an annoying metalic "ticking" sound every time I walk pass the player. The floor is suspended. The player is on fraim.
I was told by Naim, it is normal for the suspension to make such noise.
I would like to hear from anyone with similar problem/comments etc.

Nan,
I do not face this problem because I have cement floor. But I know the phenomenon when carrying my CDSII around. The boards inside are suspended by springs and the sound is probably caused by the boards hitting the sides/top. I don't think it will cause any damage to the player.
The CDSII is a remarkable player. Enjoy.

I hate to think what an LP12 would do. Do you live on a trampoline, or do you keep elephants as pets?

I don't have an LP12 and have no intention of getting one. Had you taken the time to read my post (instead of dribbling b/s)you would notice that I have a suspended floor. Furthermore, my post was to invite constructive comments and not sarcastic ones.

David...thanks.

Hyde...now, this is more like it
I'm not subjecting the CDS2, to nothing more than walking across the room. I, too, suspect something must be wrong.

Nan,
The CDS2 uses a transport suspended on leaf springs. At the end of the "leaves" are little cups. The transport rests on pins which fit inside these cups. This suspension is one of the reasons why moving the CDS2 head unit should always be done with all the transit bolts in place, otherwise the pins can jump out of the cups and may just be resting freely on the suspension leaves.
If you are concerned then contact your dealer who should be able to open up the case and inspect the suspension - rectifying the problem is just a simple case of placing the pins back inside the cups. Having said that, if your suspended floor is very bouncy then the transport will react just like a suspended turntable - it it's really bouncy then yes, you'll probably get a ticking noise as the suspension bounces around inside the player.... Best get it checked out though, just to be sure.

I would get your Dealer out and hear what he has to say. You have in effect paid the Dealer a fair amount of money, so make him earn it.
I think you are at least entitled to a "comfort factor".

Thanks, guys.
I initally spoke to the dealer. He was unsure of the cause of problem. I will give him a call again, today.

Richard,
How many of these "leaves" are there for the suspension. Are there 4, one in each corner or are there only 2.

There are three. There are also a couple of "bump stops" which could also be the cause of the "ticking" when the suspension moves about.
