Vertical MRI scanner - where ?

Posted by: Derek Wright on 06 November 2006

I have been informed that such a device exists ie one can be scanned standing or sitting up instead of lying down.

Does any one know of the location of such a device. Country is irrelevant.

Thanks

Beano

Many thanks - I was getting lots of search answers about Imaging centres but I had not used the correct term. - unless you knew these two locations from experience - many thanks - a quick call and possibly a visit to the US looms.

Slightly more than a 555/552/500 combo.

I am seriously onsidering a trip to the smoke to have a go in the London one - it wasn't much more expensive to go to the one in Boca Raton and also see a few exotic birds (feathered)

A bit of feedback on the Upright MRI scanner in London.

I had one carried out and the results obtained explained the symptons I am experiencing so a very worthwhile exercise. My specialist was most impressed with the information obtained compared to the horizontal scan.

Why post this on a HiFI forum -

1 There are some medics reading the forum and the knowledge of the new technology has not spread very far and they may find this information useful.

2 For people with back related problems that have had horizontal MRI scans that do not provide an explanation of their symptons, an upright MRI scam may be a very useful diagnostic tool.

In no way is this intended to be medical advice only an attempt to improve awareness of a new technology in th UK.

Sadly, none of my patients could afford it.

Understand - but there are times when given a choice between waiting for an unknown time and spending £670 approx then spending the money may be seen as a necessary evil.

Somewhere on the various websites I did see mention that the London machine was available for NHS use - however I expect that some money would be transferred between the NHS and the centre

Does being stood up or not effect the quality of the results or was it personal to you Derek that a polo mint one was out of the question for you, I've just had a lying down one and the results were staggering so much so I asked the medic if I could keep the pics and he said fine. An amazing bit of technology.

I had the regular horizontal scan but it did not show any significant cause of my problem as the problem is related to the effect of the load on the spine when I am standing or walking (or attempting to).

The upright scan taken when I was standing and hence the spine under load showed the cause of my symptons very clearly and the report used words like "severe" where as the horizontal report used the word "mild" when describing the same area.

Take a look at the Fonar web site - listed above in the thread and read about the benefits and and how the upright scanner can be used to great advantage. If you look over the rest of the website you can see details of a room sized scanner that the patient and surgeons can work in while the various organs are being scanned. There is one such machine in Oxford.

If I need any more info email me, my address is in my profile.
