Try "Ten" as an introduction to Pearl Jam.

yep, "Ten" is a good intro to Pearl Jam. One of my other favourites is Binaural.

I realised they were playing near where I live the other night, and of course were sold out, doh.

OK but how you rate this band?

I rate them highly, I'm well p****d off I missed the chance to see them live and I'll be buying more of thier material in the coming months.

They're wholly derivative of 1970's guitar rock. I would agree, however, that they're a great traditional rock live act (saw them on the Ten tour, but not since). My recommendation would be to see them live or download one of their thousands of bootlegs, but don't buy their albums ("Ten" was a short-term love affair when grunge was popular, but I think it would come off weak these days).

PJ are one of my fave bands. Ten is a must have, and if you like that, then try Vs, Vitology & No Code. They became a bit "mature" after that and the latest two albums have been awful. I have seen them live many, many times over the years and it's still worth seeing them if you can. Ten has not dated at all, and still sounds bang up to the minute.
I even caught them as Neil Young's backing band once at some festival (can't remember which).

I'm was a big fan of PJ for their first few albums, but rather lost touch with them of late. Their first album "Ten" is fantastic, and while some may consider it derivative, actually stands up very well on it's own.

It's a more straight-forward rock album than the other seattle based groups were putting out at that time (Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice in Chains) and certainly isn't grunge.

VS, their second album is also very good, as is Binaural, their latest, which incidentally has ex-Soundgarden man Matt Cameron behind the drums.

As with any music though, if you've heard it, and you like it, listen to it!

If you do like Ten, then you might like Temple of the Dog, which is a one off collaboration between members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Very good it is too.

Cheers

I thought Binaural was weak, but there you go. The latest is Riot Act which came out last November, but I would give it a miss.
Oh...and Yield is a good one too.

You're quite right Rasher! Have got all their live albums but have forgotten which order the last few came out in.

Like Riot Act a lot though...

WHAAA... All their live albums!!?? That is 74 to date and the current North American tour is also being released as a two CD bootleg set per show, bringing another 34 live albums to come this summer alone!!!
You must have a very expensive PJ collection my man. Cool

I give in.

Of course i meant "all their STUDIO" albums. Roll Eyes

Think that 100 live albums is perhaps a little over the top. I like 'em, but I don't like 'em THAT much!
Big Grin

Have you got any of the live albums? Is there any particular one which stands out?

I have three. I saw a live album in the shop and just bought it, not knowing it was one of millions (Cardiff). When I sussed, I bought a London one which I attended. I think I may have another one, but can't remember why I bought it - probably a rare track or something. I have the Pearl Jam Live album too, the proper one that preceeded this bootleg series, which is good. I've only heard the ones I've bought. I have a friend who has a collection of real bootleg Frank Zappa concerts that he trades with people in the states. He has now got over 450 of them. Now THAT is dedicated! Eek
Hope Nuno is not upset that we seem to have hijacked this thread.
Nuno - Just go get Ten. You will love it.

That sounds intriguing - looks like a trawl on ebay is in order.

Great band, all albums are entirely different, except for one thing, Vedders great voice.

Last album (Riot Act) was admittedly weak, but Binaural was great, still can't top Ten tho, though maybe No Code is close?

I managed to get the latest live DVD of their show at the Showbox in Seattle on 6th Dec 2002, and extraodinarily wonderful it is too. Its just a small venue, and they were on tip top form. You can only get it direct from the Pearl Jam offices - not in any shops or anything - so of course it is region 1. Get it at www.pearljam.com.
I really do recommend it very highly.
