Forum needs upgrade? (Topic moves into other areas)

Posted by: Ridzwan on 30 January 2007

It's about time for Naim to upgrade this forum to a better outlook like the Naim's main website. Almost all forums now the user can anytime put a signature (Naim only for selected member...biased?). Even most forums also the member can put their avatar and in DIY forum, the country flag will automatically reflected below your name.

Lots of improvement in Naim chains and this need to be changed too...

This would be my avatar if thing going to be implemented....

Thanks for coming out Ridzwan.

I agree! If you are really interested this pdf file [this is the "user manual" for the forum software] shows some of the add-ons that are already available (even if they are not implemented).

Three features mentioned but not implemented:

Chat
Eve's chat rooms support moderated chats, scheduled chats, celebrity designation, private chats, and member-to-member whispers.

Polls
With polls, your community members can vote on a particular question. Comments are also supported on polls.

Private Messaging
Private messaging is a means for community members to talk to each other outside the realm of the public community. Members never have to know each other's email, so this is a more secure way of having a private conversation within a community. Multiple members can participate in a private message.

I don't really understand why Naim are really strict on this issue...everything is restricted!

Buy/sell section would help user to find new buyer as well....or Naim just prefer for user or new user to purchase brand new Naim so that it will benefit them entirely?. If Naim not agree on this (buy/sell), it's fine but the rest of the issue I think it's valid!

p/s: even my attached avatar also being deleted in so called "padded cell" Winker

I think what this forum needs more than anything is some good discussions.

That's the main point + no restriction on topic to be discussed.

Absolutely true -

but not without restriction on topic .... as there seem to be areas where discussion yields little illumination.

I guess that's a politically correct answer from Rasher and he's right, but don't you think this forum deserve to be better. Does it means by agree to that reason we can't have better accessibility, layout, features?....come on it's Naim Forum!...World Class Sound and an upgrade features will enhanced Naim Image. Remember, The "non believer' visits this forum as well, thus image must be maintained.

Though I'm new here...

Forums that have Avatars and Signatures tend to turn into bling palaces where it's often hard to work out the signal from the noise.

A simple static Avatar is not so bad but the flashing gif types are appalling. Signatures are the work of the devil. A one-off witty (or not) quote at the end of every post soon becomes tedious and it's almost impossible not to read them every time.

I am suprised to find Private Messages turned off, as this is an occasionally useful way of cutting personal noise off from the Forum itself. I know of no other forum where I contribute where this isn't available. Is this a bandwidth/economy issue or a mis-trust issue?

Polls are somtimes useful too.

Private Messages are the thing I would put at the top of my "most wanted", it is an absolute pain if you want to contact someone outside of the forum (esp if that person needs to visit VisionExpress and get some new glasses!). I have no intention of putting an e-mail address into the forums so it would be helpful to have an easy workaround.

But, I would guess PM's are turned off to prevent the potential of selling on the forum? As I have no problem at all with this I guess I'll have to put up with the lack of PM's!

Avatars and sig lines I can do without.

No need to upgrade IMHO.

Its about visible discussion not avatars and private chats... Big Grin

Avatars and signatures - the work of the devil and will not appear.

Polls - a trifle pointless and so - I might re-instate them.

PMs - removed because of abuse by a banned member AND open to selling. Sorry - but they're not coming back.

Sorted (again).

How many people would welcome their return? and how many would be against?....................

I used to find them very useful, so would really welcome them back. You can, of course, moderate any mis-use if this becomes a problem.

Now we wouldn't want to be so crude as to bluntly discriminate against the Morally Disadvantaged One, would we?

The one thing you should ban is bloody smilees.

They are just plain tacky and no one with a brain can defend the flaming things. The plaything of online chavs.

As usual, you are dead wrong.

Smileys, although annoying to some, are essential to getting across subtleties that can't be put into words. If you want someone to know you are joking, or are using irony, they can be very helpful.

Adam,

Thank you for removing the tacky GIF animation.
I realise it's hard to draw a line between cheeky and cheezy, but I thought the one posted by Ridzwan was pretty cheezy.

My impression is that the forum lacks some of its previous wit and intelligence, but it seems to go in cycles.
I don't think the design needs to change, although I miss the PMs as I made some good sales in the past. Ever tried selling an old Burndy to a dealer?

Mick and irony? Never seen in the same room.

Open minded rational comment one comes to expect from MP.
Please tell me how you can tell the inference of a posted comment? Perhaps I should say how can mere mortals tell the inference....
Exactly how many chavs do you think have NAIM equipment?
Would you actually know one by their written word?
Still it is a good reactionary word to use eh?
