Forum needs upgrade? (Topic moves into other areas)
Posted by: Ridzwan on 30 January 2007
It's about time for Naim to upgrade this forum to a better outlook like the Naim's main website. Almost all forums now the user can anytime put a signature (Naim only for selected member...biased?). Even most forums also the member can put their avatar and in DIY forum, the country flag will automatically reflected below your name.
Lots of improvement in Naim chains and this need to be changed too...
This would be my avatar if thing going to be implemented....
cheers

Thank you for removing the tacky GIF animation.
I realise it's hard to draw a line between cheeky and cheezy, but I thought the one posted by Ridzwan was pretty cheezy.
this is what happen if you have forgotten to add a smiley, I\m trying to be cheeky.....

I hate to agree with Mr Parry but he is correct.
Smilees really are shit.
Get rid of them Adam and do it NOW!

I actually think the forum is OK the way it is.
For one it's simple and best of all it doesn't stick out like a soar thumb when your supervisor sneaks up behind you..
Would like PM's but agree that it would open up the selling bit.

Win - win situation. We support Naim, Naim help us...shouldn't it be that way?

Doesn't seem to have changed much.

I guess Naim's argument would be that the best way to buy used equipment is through their authorised dealers. I'd really value the PM facility - I have at times posted my email address in order to contact other members and security-wise it would be better not to have to.

Adam,
I hope you never pursue a career as a conservator of fine paintings (even though I'm sure your versions would be much better than the originals).

Correct - Up to a point.
The forum server was blissfully happy and working in splendid isolation - unfortunately, all the signposts to it had been knocked over.
AND - we were moving our other web things to a new and, better be, more reliable host.
So - probably wrong.

Re. buying, selling and private messaging.
It is going to happen somewhere so why shouldn't it here, at least in the private domain? Sellers use the cash from the sale to upgrade and buy new Naim gear, don't they?
As for abuse by a banned member if an individual deserves to be beaten with a stick the others shouldn't also be beaten. General solutions should not be sought to solve specific problems. This is the only forum I know of that does not have a private message facility.
Arbitrary control freakery springs to mind here...

It's not really about me, is it?
It's about there not being any private messaging facility on this forum for whatever reason.
The potential for an individual to be abused via private messaging exists on all forums not just here. A pm can be reported to the moderators just the same as a public post. It is certainly a problem that can be dealt with without having to do away with the facility altogether.
If buying and selling takes place in the private domain, why should you care?
I suspect that not facilitating members' exchanging email addresses and phone numbers with each other in private (as well as their Naim gear) is a policy of divide & rule - a cowardly form of authoritarianism.

When I have "moved on" I will be attempting to inject some additional interest (particularly to the Padded Cell). I will also be studying humour and essaying to bring some levity to my contributions.
Those interested in participating should "hit the ground running" by downloading the 'In Our Time' Series (Radio 4) and watching 'The Ascent of Man'.
There will be a test

PM's can be cut and pasted as someone found out on Wigwam so they are not as private as some think.

I did have that particular instance in mind.

Indeed, this is the only podcast which I subscribe to, and is certainly my fave radio prog.
I will pass the test. I always do. I am a swot.

It is not rocket science to obtain a persons e-mail address (should they want you to have it, of course)

I don't get the 'ban the smiley' comments since they are likely to just reappear in time-honoured ASCII form :-* or is it :-(

Naim wouldn't care, but their dealers probably would.
Speaking as a dealer (in another field) I personally (given a choice) will not deal with manufacturers who either sell direct to end-users, or facilitate same. The consequences of doing this are well documented.

Perhaps Pink Fish could also use an upgrade in hosting–their entire site is down today....

Most decent dealers move /h gear on and deduct the full selling price from the invoice for the new gear. There isn't really a need to sell on a hi-fi forum if upgrading.
However, the high s/h values of Naim kit are what justify the price tags of the new gear. Reputation, longevity and service are part of the picture.
No buying and selling in the public domain on this forum really should suffice in order to be seen to support the dealer network.

Do not go that way young hobbit:
"Pippin: Gandalf, forgive me.
Gandalf: Look at me. What did you see?
Pippin: A tree. There was a white tree in a courtyard of stone. It was dead. The city was burning.
Gandalf: Minas Tirith? Is that what you saw?
Pippin: I saw... I saw him. I can hear his voice in my head.
Gandalf: What did you tell him? Speak!
Pippin: He asked me my name. I didn't answer. He hurt me.
Gandalf: What did you tell him about Frodo and the Ring?"
