Power amp to go with nait 3

Posted by: Gareth on 11 April 2003

Hello.

I have a CD 3.5 which is hicapped (bought 2nd hand in need of servicing - in the process of arranging), a nait 3 and credos.
My next purchase will be a 2nd hand power amp and convert the nait to a pre-amp.
So I would like to hear your opinions on which would be the best long term purchase taking
in mind that I will eventually get a better pre-amp.

Many thanks

I think you'd be better off economically if you sold the Nait and bought a used preamp. The Nait will probably bring in more cash than a 72 will cost, and you can buy a 32.5, 42, 42.5, 62, 92, or 72 and at least match the Nait's preamp's section.

You might consider hicapping the Nait before buying an amp, too.

Regards.

Garath,

If you are going to keep the Nait as the pre-amp, I would suggest that you aim for at least a 180.

I did'nt know it was possible to hicap a Nait 3 (as Nait 5) how do I do that

cut cut

oh yes, he can hi-cap the nait3 but i don't suggest this, sound came too dark, i had a nait 3/140 combo and imho is better than 72 (without hi-cap) more warm and musical, less treble extension but nice sound....

That sounds really strange to me. I have lived many years with a nait 3r, first bare, then flatcapped and now hicapped and I would say that even the flatcap simply transforms the nait making it a much much better amp, the hicap more so. Maybe it's a "sourceissue" but I really can't imagine anyone preferring an uncapped nait to a capped one. If you go this route you can later use the nait as a preamplifier and add a bigger poweramp.

Per, the nait 3 needs to be converted by a dealer to accept a cap. After that you can use it as an integrated or as a pre.
