Should I part ex my DVD5?

Posted by: AndyMac on 26 August 2008

I currently have a DVD5 which is used for DVD and CD playback. The wife and I are planning on getting a HDX soon, so the DVD5 will only be used for DVDs.

Now that Blue Ray has won the race and there will not be an upscaler available for the DVD5. I was thinking, should I put the DVD5 as a part ex for a HDX, and then get an upscaling DVD player(Pioneer DVD LX50)? I'll then wait for a Naim Blu Ray player.

I know the DVD5 picture is fantastic, but I have seen a few films upscaled, and they on first impressions seem great. Would the DD DTS let things down?

Thanks,

Andy

Andy, the short answer is "Yes, definitely!". I previously owned a DVD5/AV2 and now I have the Pioneer player you mention (with a Sony AV amp). Good as the DVD5 is, I think quite frankly it is now beginning to look out-dated and absurdly over-priced for the level of performance on offer. It's good, but worth about two and a half grand? - no way! The Pioneer is a superb machine with excellent picture and sound on movies, for about a tenth of the cost! To my mind, the DVD5 now makes no sense at all and I wouldn't be surprised to see it dropped from the range in the not-too-distant future.

Regards,

Peter

LOL. Just get a PS3 player and be happy. In addition, let's see if you can even resell your DVD5.

When I saw Tuan had replied to this question I knew exactly what he had said before I read it.

My guess is that the DVD5 is built under Just In Time manufacturing as in, when one is ordered, the machine is finally built and finished. People are still willing to buy it so Naim are still willing to sell it.

Just my 2p worth.

Oh yeah, I do have a DVD5 Big Grin

Surely the question of worth depends completely on what the dealer is willing to offer for the DVD5?

If you did swap the DVD5 for the HDX, then you may as well buy a blu-ray machine since that seems to be where you're headed. In the short term, one of the more usual suspects such as the Panasonic BD50 (or soon-to-be-released BD51) will give you great pictures and reasonable sound. Note: bl;uray discs have the much vaunted high resolution audio, but so far I've not been particularly impressed with them - they don't seem much better than the compressed DTS and DD streams to me! So don't expect too much from them...

Oh, and why not a PS3? Because it seems impossible to break the region coding...

I 'evolved' from a very good DVD player (Arcam DV29) to a Panasonic Blu-Ray player. Make no mistake, there is a significant dropoff in the video performance in standard definition DVDs from the Arcam to the Panasonic. I now find myself only interested in watching movies on Blu-Ray. So the moral of the story is that if you do get rid of the DVD5, make sure you will have a steady flow of Blu-Ray movies otherwise you'll be dissapointed.

I had been using the DV29 for CDs also, so part of my move was because I wanted a CD5x, which has turned out to be a fantastic addition.
