SBL's good match with Nait-2 ?

Posted by: Alco on 16 September 2002

Howdy Y'all,

No,No, I'm not planning on selling my Kan's again and buy me some SBL's but I found something on the German Ebay site (www.ebay.de) that caught my attention.

There's a guy offering his (oldstyle) Nait-2 and in that same ad he's mentioning some Naim SQL roll eyes confused speakers.
When I looked ad the ad of the Naim SQL speaker it looked just like an SBL to me!

He's offering the (walnut?) SBL's for a ridiculously low starting price of 695,- euro/437,- UKP!
Also he claimes that the 'perfect' amp for this speaker is the Nait-2.

Now, I know that Naim also mentiones on their site that most Naim speakers are easy to drive, but I've never heard of somebody driving SBL's with a Nait-2. ...or is there someone outthere who ownes (or heard) this strange combo.

Greetings,
Alco smile

I've run SBLs with my Nait1. Sounded fine to me...

The SQL is the cabinet on the left of the picture. wink

Nait-1 (and I think this should hold for the Nait-2 as well) is not capable of controlling the SBLs. They need at least a 140 (better 250).

Al, to get the most out of sbls you obviously need a better amp but the nait is more than capable of driving them. One thing I didn't try was playing anything at 'ear bleed' type volumes, naturally it may struggle with this.
One of my friends (non hi-fi type) actually preferred cdx-nait-sbls to cdx-102-scap-180-sbls... go figure.

Hmm, but that's what some people also say about a Nait (1 or 2) driving Kan's, but there were lots of people in the 80's enjoying a Nait/LP12/Kan combo. I don't have any trouble driving my Kan's with a Nait-2 either. Also Tony Lonorgan has gone from a (correct me if I'm wrong) 32.5/HC/250 to a Nait-2 driving his Kan's.
SBL are also more efficient than Kan's.

but I haven't had the oppertunity to try SBL's on my Nait-2. Maybe some day... roll eyes

I've just picked up a NAIT2. Before I handed over hard cash, I slotted it into my system to check it actually worked and left it in there for three days or so - a CDS2/NAIT2/SBLs definitely sounded great. To say that a NAIT won't drive SBLs is way over-simplistic.

Quoting selectively from a mate:

"Seriously, it's great.....it's got all the fundamentals - it really has. The sense of the music (admittedly a single comparison track, more stuff from Lampchop) is clearly there, you'd have
absolutely no trouble recognising the music and getting a lot out of it. Set-up this way, this is a great argument for a CDS II, NAIT, SBL (Allae?)type system. But, maybe far more raucous, demandingly dynamic (or simply badly recorded?) music might make the combo seem overly-revealing of problems....Anyway, thumbs up for the NAIT II."

We then put back the 52/250 and somehow never got around to comparing the NAIT again that evening.

Tim

P.S. Should have said that the NAIT probably needs a service.

I've run my SBL's on a Nait 2 to great effect.

They'll let you know when the amp's running out of puff.

Alco,

IMO the combination Nait2/SBL is possible (no doubt) but not effective (no doubt to me also), because the SBL is a great speaker, capable to reproduce music on a much higher level as a Nait2 will be able to offer. Therefore SBL´s should be used passive at least with a NAP 180 or active with 2x140 at least. Preamp 82 would be fine.

Don´t get irritated by the price of entry on ebay.de! Just await the last 10 minutes...

Why not selling your Kan´s for SBL´s??

"Why not selling your Kans for SBLs?"

Why not? Because we already had a thread or two about "Where did my Kannies go, poor liddle babies..."

Alco advertizes only one (1) Kan for sale and we're gonna book him. Sheer self-defense.

So that's why. First Alco goes to Texas. Then we're willing to talk about another round of selling the Kans, remorse, and getting the Kans back.

did that. worked well. even in direct comparison to 102/hi/180. it's quite a little bugger.

this post had to be edited for a grave gremmar mistke. please accept my humble apologies.

The most important upgrade: Forget about your system.

Why not ? because I'm pretty satisfied with my Nait-2/Kans combination and also because I never see s/h SBL's. (not in my area that is!)

Hmm, I guess some of you guys didn't get the picture of this thread. I was just curious if anyone ever heard/owned a Nait-2/SBL combo and also found it to be a 'perfect' combination, because I've never read/heard anything about this combo.
I'm not planning on selling my Kans. smile

greetings Y'all,
