RFD: Alternative flat-earth forum?

Hi Paul.

Not really; the HFC forum is pretty much dying a death due to lack of input from its owners - as we all know, for these things to succeed you've got to nurture the community - and that's one area in which that forum is falling down. Moreover, it's hellishly slow (even on a cable internet connection such as I'm using) and its net is cast a little too widely for the purposes of the 'eclectic flat earth' (for instance).

Nice of you to bring it to my attention, though.

But will it get the critical mass to keep it going ?

...is always the key thing. From my other forums (fora? I can never make my mind up on that one) I know that what keeps people coming back is a healthy attitude, good content and easy to use, fast site. Content attracts new members, so the key thing is ensuring that there is enough interest in the sorts of things to be contained prior to setting the site up. This forum is a good example of one which has grown through the enthusiasm of its members, and I'd aim to provide a viable alternative (but not competitor) to this forum for all of the folks who don't quite fit into the Naim mould but appreciate its style and content.

Due to the much smaller customer base of these companies over (say) Naim, I have always found it VERY difficult to find out answers to my questions (such as "what does that toggle switch on the inside of my DNM 3B Start actually do?") -

Err - that's a very interesting point of view, TC. I would point out that your lack of information has no relation to the (smmall) customer base, but in fact bears a direct relation to the style and approachabilty of the companies in question. Or to take it one step further - Customer Service.

Surely a customer can simply call a manufacturer and get a straight answer? Or am I wearing rose-tinted pornstar shades after buying Naim products for ten years?

Perhaps the forum you propose would indeed provide a place for punters of oddball marques a place to gather and discuss... although they are already well served on such places as the Naim Forum, The Mana Forum, and the newsgroups.

That said, I'll duck in for a look from time to time - should be interesting. Good luck!

You could try the Analogue Addicts mailing list.

It has been an excellent source (pun intended) of useful info for me over recent years.

Can't comment on your pornographic leanings, but where smaller companies are concerned it isn't always possible to get the correct person on the phone when you need them - in fact, it's a feather in Naim's cap indeed if they have the designers 'manning the telephones' if you will. Smaller companies probably can't spare the time, which is not something unique to this industry.

However, saying all of that, one of the purposes behind such a forum is to provide a repository of 'in the field' information which can answer a lot of the questions customers or prospective customers might have, thus reducing the load on the manufacturer.

smaller companies that don't will generally stay smaller.

Apparently some don't want to expand. My dealer told me that DNM aim to sell no more than 500 amplifiers per year. Seems crazy to me, but there you have it...

Expansion is only necessary if you're seeking greater sales; it's risky, requires extra staff and if you're happy with the profit margins on your company and don't feel the need for more (offset against the added risk) then I can see some logic in staying small...

If you fancy a look at my new place please use http://pub65.ezboard.com/bpinkfishmedia as the link, not the one above as it will take you to the main forum page - I am learning how to do this stuff on the fly, so bare with me!
