Earlier 52 vs Current 82 (Both with Supercap)
Posted by: Edwin on 11 June 2002
I have heard many conflicting opinions on this topic. Some say any 52 is better than the 82. Others say the current 82 is better than an early (say '92) 52. What's the truth?!

The 52PS can be upgraded to Naim to SuperCap spec.
Or maybe someone would sell the 52 without the PS?

I've tried to find it with the search facility, with no luck. There was a thread about this sometime in the last year, and the main point was that even the first 52 off the line would heartily trounce the best of the 82s.

Check with Naim. I had my 1994 PS upped to Supercap in 1997(c. £900 IIRC) and no mods needed to 52 itself

James,
no, it's a simple drop-in replacement.
It's strange, though - I've never once seen a 52PS for sale separately.

I figured that this would have to be the case. It probably wouldn't do to have an 82 beat a 52 of any vintage.
I did confirm this directly with Naim today. They said that there is a lot of mis-information about this issue and that I should rest assured that even an older 52 will be comfortably better than a current production 82.
