Is Naim addictive?

Posted by: Massimo Bertola on 28 April 2009

What with the Forum, the website, ebay, various sites of s/h sales, I'm beginning to feel about myself the symptoms of a real addiction. Naim has dug its way deep inside my day in a way that it's starting to worry me a bit. has anybody else experienced such a condition? Can it be discussed publicly? I'll give good example by addressing to you all and declaring myself Naimaholic. I won't be able, though, to discuss it further because I plan to keep off the forum for a good while. I won't restrain from buying, anyway, if necessary..

I've struggled with the habit for over 15 years now. Once you're hooked on Naim it's impossible to break away - serious withdrawl symptoms...

I might have to sign up to a Twelve Steps programme...

The one thing you can do with Naim equipment that I am not aware you can do with any other manufacture (Linn LP12 being possibly the only other, but this is only 1 single component) is to change 1 small piece of your system to upgrade it. You never have to sell your complete system and buy a new one every couple of years to get an improvement. Add a power supply, change a power supply, change a interconnect lead, change a mains lead, change a CD player / Pre-amp. This not only works with the current range but applies to equipment over 10 years old. When you come to sell something you will usually get a very reasonable price. It is as if the equipment is like gold bullion, a recognised currency for buying and selling. If you like the sound the entry level equipment produces it will only get better from there on up. There is no rush to upgrade as they are only on their 4th appearance change in around 35 years and no matter where you decide to stop upgrading you should be happy and content.
I bought my first piece of Naim equipment in 1975 and have continued changing pieces every few years ever since and it always brings a smile to my face.

It's not the boxes that are addictive, but how they are presenting music.

I agree it is addictive, when I was at university I had a picture of cd5/112/150 pinned above my desk for 3 years. The day I received my results I immediately got my graduate loan and purchased them. It was a great day!

Yes, twenty-five years ago, I first began to recognise I was a problem user when I would walk into a room in a shared student house that we were having a look over and first check out where the mains plugs were, and where the system might go.

First purchase on having landed proper job after graduation, a Rega planar 3 with A&R p77.

Best, Chris

I started on relatively hard stuff at the time, 42.5 110, escalated to 202 200, extra hits taken of naps, then hicaps, then 250, before I new it I was onto a supercap, not content I had 252, now superlining. Where will it end Confused
One hell of a trip though!

I agree. It's a compulsion. But it doesn't change my restlessness..
