Take on Amy

Posted by: Wolf2 on 17 February 2008

I'm not really current in the music scene with all the new females especially. Can't keep them straight as none stand out to me. I watched the Grammys and it was lots of bling and pyrotechnics with little musical originality to me. Then they finally put on Amy Winehouse from a small club. WOW! Knocked me over flat. What a sound. Just looking at her I realized she wasn't the normal singer and the 50s girl band jazz R&B influence was soooo enthralling. I bought her CD the next day. Gutsy and edgy, it's a bit raw and can't go thru it more than once a day.

I realize that she has personal problems and hope she gets beyond that. The news paper the next day had an article about all her problems in bullet points and not one word about where she comes from or how she got that sound. There have certainly been lots of performers in the past that have gotten over drug use. On the evening news just after broadcast the cam was following Ringo as he was walking out and he just said about the grammys "Yeah it was great fun, GO AMY!"

What is your take on her from over the pond? I'm surprised there isn't a thread on her already.

yes she has defiantly got the wow factor, great.
Posted on: 17 February 2008 by 555
I love her!
Back to Black is a brilliant record.
Frank is good, but B2B is much better IMHO.

Sadly she has been has been patchy live IME,
but from recent news reports it sounds like she's on the road to recovery Smile

I can't get Winehouse at all - there's are loads of really great female singer/songwriters around - Basia Bulat, Kate Rusby, Rachel Unthank, Karine Polwart, Laura Cantrell, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucinda Williams, Kate Walsh, Katie Doherty, Lisa Knapp, Eddi Reader, Christine Collister, Martha Tilson, Jenna Wills - and then there is Amy Winehouse, she is not for me, I'm afraid.

Sorry, if this was meant to be an appreciation thread.

A woman voice in a girl body.
Hope she'll survive the pushers.

I agree with you ROTF, from the people you mentioned you wouldn't like Amy Winehouse.

Her Back to Black album is sensational both as a pop album for the masses and for the cognoscenti. It is my favourite album of last year and gets better with each listen. She had a genius producer in Mark Ronson too. I agree with 555 that 'Frank' was good and showed she had great potential but not to this level. She is possibly not that well liked in this country in some ways because her every movement is watched and analysed by the press. It is akin to the problems Britney has in the States where she can't move for 'scrum' sticking cameras in her face.

It is fair to say her life has been a car crash or more like, a train wreck. She seems to have got back on track since her husband has tootled off to jail but don't hold out much for her when he is released. In my (prof) experience if you have a partner who is involved in heavy end drugs it can be hard to separate yourself from that particularly if you are drawn to that culture.. Clearly there is also a lot of disposable income floating around too which won't help.

IMO, dump the husband and go out with a 'decent sort' and she may be on the road to recovery rather than....................................

I agree ALMOST entirely with ROTFs list of great female singers.I just find the latest crop of girls AW ,Lily Allen etc seem to have a voice that grates on my lugs.
Plenty of singers to go round though, so not a problem.

Another vote here for Amy. Back to Black is a great record, albeit blighted with the modern affliction of being a terrible recording, ie all loud with no dynamics.

Shame about her personal life and the fact she seems to generate more publicity for this than for her music. She might be more appreciated for her music else.

I don't have the money to chase down all the latest singers, tho I guess that's what the internet is for, to test their music before you buy.

the singers I like are Ella, Sarah, Etta, Emmylou, Allison K., RLJones, and don't forget Joni. Definitely old school.

I wasn't impressed with the divas on the Grammys, too much flash. I know there's a whole music scene you have we don't get much exposure to over here.

I can see why someone wouldn't like Amy's sound, it is aggressive and can be irritating. I bought it south of LA and played it in the car driving home. It went around 2 times and I was glad to turn it off and go to classical.

On vinyl, Munch?

I have the album on CD (for the car) and on UK vinyl. I'd be interested to hear what the US import is like as the Brit one is still poor to my ear.

I have the U.S. LP - I think no better really although only had chance to give it a brief go and there's a really crap re-mix crappy piece of crap stuck on the end of S2 - I'll bring it along in March if you like and compare to CD?

Or UK to US pressing.

Somehow I think it will be a struggle to find a good recording of this anywhere. Someone posted a link on here to an argument that was raging on her website over the same issue. The guy who was complaining was made to feel 'persona non grata' for raising the subject, whilst her fans were incredulous at the suggestion anyone should think it was a poor recording.

It just goes to show what people will accept for sound quality these days and is a shame as this apathy or, more likely, ignorance will make good recordings a rarity.

How strange!!! I was thinking I really ought to buy Amy's Back to Black album so I have ordered a Japanese copy from CDJapan yesterday. I will report on the sound quality when it arrives.

If she keeps blazing away on that pipe she wont even be left with a voice for long either.

She always sounds like she's just smoked a packet of Craven 'A' anyway, or is that just added distortion on the production? Big Grin

Would any of our heroes be any different today? Hendrix, the stones, clapton... Could they have avoided temptation or would they have just been using for artistic experimentation?

I first came across Amy Winehouse when she was on the Jonothan Ross show singing Back to Black. My wife and I just gaped in astonishment, not only was the song special (and familiar since it is kind of melody which was more often heard in the 60's or before) also she is such a great raw talented singer, I bought the album and was amazed to find out that she wrote most of her own songs. She is one serious talent. Also her songs have a lot of continental melody with underlining of sympatico which I suspect will go down very well in Europe.

I have this fear that if she came of her drugs, booze and whatever her talent may go, this is bad of me and selfish. It reminds me of Shane McGowan of the Progues who also has written fantastic songs, who admitted pubicly that he was at the time a heavy drinker and his best written songs were written while under the influence of alcohol...

I agree with the first paragraph but not convinced that if she went on the wagon she would deteriorate, I think Live she would improve (not hard from many accounts). Agree with MUNCH that mark Ronson had a major hand in Amy's success.

Oh well, you got me! I've heard hundreds of stories about her but never a single song, mind you. Until today and the reading of this topic. So, I went to my local music shop and bought the damn thing! This is not bad at all. will need a few more listens because I'm not used to this kind of music at all. Sounds a bit happy to me Smile
