Take on Amy

Posted by: Wolf2 on 17 February 2008

I'm not really current in the music scene with all the new females especially. Can't keep them straight as none stand out to me. I watched the Grammys and it was lots of bling and pyrotechnics with little musical originality to me. Then they finally put on Amy Winehouse from a small club. WOW! Knocked me over flat. What a sound. Just looking at her I realized she wasn't the normal singer and the 50s girl band jazz R&B influence was soooo enthralling. I bought her CD the next day. Gutsy and edgy, it's a bit raw and can't go thru it more than once a day.

I realize that she has personal problems and hope she gets beyond that. The news paper the next day had an article about all her problems in bullet points and not one word about where she comes from or how she got that sound. There have certainly been lots of performers in the past that have gotten over drug use. On the evening news just after broadcast the cam was following Ringo as he was walking out and he just said about the grammys "Yeah it was great fun, GO AMY!"

What is your take on her from over the pond? I'm surprised there isn't a thread on her already.

Have to say that I am an AW convert. Was 'encouraged' to listen to her by a friend after avoiding for some time, as a personality I didn't care for her much!

Back to Black is simply brilliant, whilst she is a troubled and misguided soul there is an authenticity to her work that the likes of Duff, Adele etc just dont have. I would not put her in the same bracket as these popsters, AW is in my view a real thing.

i know i'm not alone in amyland. i would go so far as to say she could border on greatness if she matures and survives w/o major brain damage or injury. and one gets a totally different picture of her pitiful offstage antics in the context of her art. other great musicians have overcome their addictions to have rewarding careers; i very much hope she will be among that group, rather than the flameouts. and what could be a greater quirk than a BRIT CHIC soul singer?!?!?! she even plays good guitar!!

Apparently her father reported it incorrectly. She hasn't got emphysema, just a condition that could lead to it if she carries on as she has been doing (fags, crack cocaine etc.)....

did anybody see the clip of her punching the "fan" over the the weekend?

Also rubbish at Glasto, and she looked very jaundiced-yellow. Liver problems ahoy.

Still can't see what the fuss is about. Don't like her music and she seems like a horrible person to me. Sorry, but it has to be said.

I think she's not horrible.
Agents are horrible.
And all those that keep on taking her from a concert to another to squeeze money from someone that need a good clinic rather than flash lights.
Btw they're sure that if she dies they'll keep on making money just like they did on many others.

I have always failed to see her "greatness". Just another sad drunk/addict ala Pete Docherty.

I hope she recovers from her problems, but her music means nothing to me I'm afraid. There are better artists (i.e. better singers, better songwriters, more sincere) who don't make headlines. Wouldn't it be nice if our media recognised the good things that happen and leave poor Amy alone.

Just a thought

Rotf

PS I'm probably biased because Amy Winehouse, Robbie Williams et al just don't make the kind of music I enjoy.

ROTF,

It's your sentiments that are right about Amy the music is secondary, though could this be another Janis Joplin. I've heard that Southern Comfort used to send her crates of Whisky because the publicity was good for business, being so young myself Smile and not being around at the time it could be a load of old bull but I would not put it past some companies.

Janis was used and manipulated and ultimately destroyed - one of the saddest tales in the history of rock music. It is difficult to listen to her albums without getting emotional - I still regard Pearl as one of the finest records I have. In the last song Janis ever wrote and recorded just a few days before her death she asks the Lord to buy her a Mercedes-Benz, a color TV and a night on the town.

Echoes of Elvis and Colonel Tom Parker here in Elvis' last couple of years?

Back to Black is a fantastic album & Amy has a brilliant voice IMHO.

I find the media circus surrounding Amy obscene, & it's easy to take potshots at her.
From watching her Glasto performance she obviously isn't well.
Addiction is an illness & I hope Amy recovers soon.

I had to stop Mrs. 555 'phoning 999 to get an ambulance for Amy,
when she saw her Glastonbury performance last year on TV.

Last year I thought Amy's Glasto performance was a mess,
whereas this year was at best limp.

Seems we have a very different take on things Garfield!

I particularly like the way she is standing by her thug of a husband. Lovely. I have known hard drug users and none of them have thought its OK to assault people.

I know many very hard drug misuser's and people who problematically misuse alcohol. Often violence has been and is part of their lives............. certainly not all tho.

Is media coverage of Amy porn?
