A little hiss from a 250

Posted by: chiapet on 07 April 2003

I just got a 250/hicap from the early 80's for a demo before deciding to purchase. I noticed a little hiss coming out from both speakers when volume is turned right down to zero. Some output noise I figure (not a snake !) Is it normal to have a little hiss from 250 or could it be the 32 ?
Thanks

How loud is the Hiss?. My 32.5/Hi/250 hisses through the speakers but its only detectable with my ear close to the Briks tweeters. If it is audible from your normal seated position I'd get them looked at at a dealers.

You may want to allow for the possibility of having to have the older boxes serviced and thus take this into account when negotiating the final price. My amp only has a slight hiss when my ear is pressed right against the tweeter.

I used to have a problem with 250 hiss from the World Trade Center tower. Here's a less extreme but effective suggestion courtesy of Dave Dever, formerly of NANA:

Quick and dirty

Without any internal modifications or outlay of cash, you may get some mileage out of the following tweak, which I used whilst living downstream from the radio transmitters on Chicago's Sears Tower (and with a Prefix, to
boot).
If you coil your interconnect(s) once under the destination piece of equipment prior to connecting it at the DIN or XLR socket, this creates enough inductance to filter off some RF noise, with the most minimal reduction in sound quality. Coil only once, as too many loops will quickly degrade the sound.
