So how do you explain the DVD5 and n-Vi?

DVD5 was and still is, a very competent player, both visul and audio and hit the market when DVDs were nicely established with a good catalogue of music DVDs - a bit like Naim's first entry into CDs, about 10 years after CDs were launched.
n-Vi was a misjudgement IMHO. Better overlooked.
If (big if) music Blu-ray ever gets off the ground, Naim might be tempted to produce a top-rank player plus processor. but I can't see there being enough market volume in music DVDs for at least another 5 years.
Cheers

from what i can see as an average joe consumer, they were testing the water to see how well it took. developing AV costs alot more with the licencing as well as how fast moving that industry is. it seems every day there is a new feature that is a MUST have. so they might take a back seat until BR is in its final format and more of the market owns blueray.
also at the moment there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference between BR players, even from entry level s350 by sony up to the Denon BR transport there is a slight difference but not enough to make a £2500+ player a must have. Saying that i am sure naim would do a stunning job.
sorry for the unstructured ramble.

I don't think it will happen - the cost of entry is high and they keep moving the goal posts - the most I would expect is an AV3 that handles the high bit rates BUT even these are subject to copy right control (The bane of my life - every thing I have is HDCP compliant but the rig works for a few weeks then needs a complete power reset - with a strictly controlled sequence to get things working again. It seems like the industry is trying to make me go illegal as it's easier to subvert the DRM protection than to view a film I bought legally!

Simply won't happen end of discussion. I know Naim did the Av2 and DVD5 however follow ups to theses are a long way off. I spoke with a dealer recently about the problems I had with my Linn unidisk player and tbh most of what he told me I already knew. Producing AV products for small companies is a nightmare.
If you look at Naim and Linn both are going down the music server route Linn with DS and Naim with the HDX I expect Naim to do some sort of hard drive server in the future. Linn have only done one av product recently and thats a stereo preamp with basic decoding of DD and DTS although it does have a six channel input. If you look at Linn's speaker range the new Majik range has NO centre channel yet.
IMO both companies got bite a little with Licensing fees and production costs and will only do AV when the market settles only thing is it does not settle. think screens six years ago it was plasma two years ago lcd this year it's LED by 2010 sony hope to only produce OLED it's way to progressive industry and to fast moving for small companies to keep up with.
Interestingly when speaking with the same dealer I asked if I should up grade my blu ray player in the future answer just stick with you're sony machine for the near future there would be little or no improvement switching to a denon.
so as for a Naim Blu ray player not a hope, for the record I got my Sony player free with the my LCD it retailed for £350 and the new model goes for a little over £200. how can Naim compete with that they can't so it would have to be some blu ray player to justify the cost.
only my thoughts I also doubt any time soon you will see an AV3 like I have mentioned and during this time, credit crunch, few companies will take a gamble best to stick to tried and tested products that sell.
