Outdoor car cover

Posted by: anderson.council on 04 January 2010

Happy New Year all,

Anyone using an outdoor car cover that they would recommend ? We only have the 1 car garage and the other half's car fits in easier than my car. So although it's in a fairly secure location it still cops the elements.

Thanks
Scott

Sell one car?

Roll Eyes

Not an option I'm afraid. We did live for nearly 10 years with only the 1 car in Brisbane - we both worked in the inner city and so could and did get to work via cycle, public transport and ocassional car use. Back in the UK like most people outside of London we work in different directions from where we live and public transport is just too painful on a daily basis.

When we bought the house recently we did hope to get a double garage but these were as rare as rocking horse crap and would have nudged us up another rung on the house price ladder. A step up that we felt was not really worth it and we couldn't afford without selling our properties in Brisbane.

I'd be very wary of car covers. Unless the car's very old its paint finish will withstand all the british weather can throw at it.

The problem with covers is they can cause scratches from the movement of the material so not a good thing to put over a dirty car.

Thanks Tony, I did wonder about putting a cover on a wet/dirty car. I guess I really just want to avoid the extra 5-10 minutes waiting for the ice to disperse on mornings like this one was.

Cheers

They used to do a half circular(ish) framed tent type thing. You folded it back onto the ground drove out of the open end , reverse procedure on return, and folded the tent back over thcar. , which incidentally "anchored" the tent by virtue of it's wheels being parked on the cross pieces.

There were a couple on an auction site which will show you the sort of thing look under "Perambulator Folding Garage - Portable Temporary Garage"

What tonym said - I've heard it said that you would really have to follow a rigid regime of cleaning your car before fitting the cover to avoid paint damage.

About as much chance of me following that regime as my other new year's resolutions....
