Half full or half empty, Chillkram?

Mark, I just needed to say how heartening (and amusing) I have found your apparently endless reservoir of wit, good humour and optimism in the recent (and continuing) threads on our present (and continuing?) sporting disasters.

Since this covers more than one sport, I thought I ought to put it into a new thread!

(Off topic, did you home in on Geddon or Lingo?)

Please do continue to 'make me smile' - though probably not in the sense meant by Steve Harley...!

Smile

James

There's no point letting it get you down in my opinion. We've had a good run, won the RU world cup and the Ashes lately and we're going through a bad patch all 'round at the moment. Most nations rarely win anything and never expect to. I'm sure we'll come out the other side. In the meantime we may as well have a laugh. We're often accused of being the arrogant english. Let's show we can be good losers and keep our humour (whilst still striving to win and boost the national morale).

On the 'Geddon/Lingo front I was waiting for my dealer to order in the kit and now work/childcare commitments have delayed my audition. I have a week off week commencing 4th Dec and my appointment is booked for the 5th. I can't wait.

Blimey! It's thundering now, better go and unplug everything!

Kind regards

Mark

Anyway James, all is still not lost. It could all click together and the rugby team could turn in a brilliant performance today that sets us on the road to winning the world cup!

England could still earn a draw out of the first test and, don't forget, we lost the first test in the 2005 series and went on to win. Losing the toss at the Gabba was always going to be an uphill battle anyway.

We will still retain the Ashes.

The national football team may qualify for the Euros and and discover how to unlock Gerrard and Lampard's ability to play together. Walcott may come through just in time to make an impact and win us the whole tournament. Witness France's woeful performance at Euro '96 followed by the the much touted Zidane finally hitting form in '98 and Henry emerging as a world talent to win them the trophy.

And then there are the improving performances of The Tractor Boys and Rangers who will turn their seasons around and both make the play off final at the New Wembley in May next year.

And if none of this happens? Well then we can just sit back and enjoy a nice glass of red, put on some Rory/Jimi/Kate/HMHB (delete as appropriate), have a bit of a chuckle about it and reflect that they are all just games after all.

Mark

ps. We're going to win the Olympics in 2012 as well!

Oops! Both lost 1-0.

Well our football teams lost, England were walloped again. At least we've got the final day of the Ashes 1st test to look forward to tonight!

Duh! It appears that you meant Rangers of the 'Queens Park' variety! Oops!

Dear friends,

Thiugh I am a profound pessimist about the way humans are using our one and only planets, I am a cheary bugger in reality!

I just cannot help being jolly, but that rarely shows in my posts, so generally you get me in a lopsided version!

But I honest never could see why have full or half empty could either be constued as optimistic or pessimistic! Would someone at least tell me which is which? Maybe the explaination of why would pass me by, but it would be nice to read that as well.

I am going to pub in a minute, so, "Jesu Maria, Pray for me!"

The optimist thinks that this is the best of all possible worlds; the pessimist knows it.

Put another way; the pessimist sees a bottle half empty , an optimist sees it half full!

I'm on a roll here; always borrow money from a pessimist as he never expects to get out back!

Apologies for a temporary topic derailment to Mark and James!

Thanks for that, as half empty is generally how I describe a glass, but never felt it was less hopefull than half full!

As borroing money from me, I can tell you that what is left is earmarked for a very important life altering project, which must show there is some optimism left, and honestly I have rarely got any money I loaned to people (larger sums, not the odd tenner) back! I tend to give it away if I like the person. Saves loosing a friend, and of course they may well want to give it back when they can!

Half full is an optimist,
Half empty is a pessimist,
Wrong size is an engineer!

Definition of an eternal optimist:

354 for a draw - pessimist
355 to win - optimist

I can see the headline - now Thunderstorm saves Aussies.

Always, the optimist, Rotf
