This one really is difficult, seeing as so much of my listening is based around female vocals. Here goes then - but this could easily be so different.......

Anita Baker
Elizabeth Fraser
K.D. Lang
Tracey Thorn
Barbra Streisand

When it is female singers, I can think of name after name, but the thread asking for 5 male singers is a real challenge.

Kathleen Ferrier [alto]
Gladys Ripley [alto]

Kirsten Flagstad [soprano]
Isobel Bailie [soprano].

Not in any order of preference. I cannot see value in comparing or ordering the great!

George, I'll see your Kathleen Ferrier, and raise you...

Joan Sutherland (sop)
Cecilia Bartoli (mezz)
Agnes Baltsa (mezz)
Felicity Lott (sop)

I am not old enough to have seen Ferrier or Sutherland, or been in the right place at the right time to see Bartoli, but I am thankful to have been able to see Flott, and the hugely underrated Agnes Baltsa (three times).

Dear James,

I love Felicity Lott. That's the trouble with these lists. It is what comes into your head as best it can while I am trying to be sensible!

I have to have six now!

Mind you I reckon Pinky and Perky beat most Male singers!

He bowled quite well today, but not heard him sing.

As good as he might be, I bet Freddie sounds nothing like the Last Castrato:

Not a femmale vocalist, but the last of the full grown men who sang in the female range without singing in falsetto! Sad though it is it does have it is emotional impact.

Alessandro Moreschi (The last castrato ). Ave Maria, Bach/Gounod. Recorded in about 1902.

4. Sara K.
5.Billy Holliday/ Eddi Reader/ Julia Fordham/Delores Riordan/ Gillian Welch/Sade etc. etc. etc.
