Which internet tablet for HDX
Posted by: nocker on 16 March 2009
I can not see the HDX screen from my listening position and do not like operating it from my laptop. I also do not want to connect it via the TV. I have heard that you can get hand held tablets.
Could someone answer the following please in laymans terms for 'a not very computer literate person'
1) how do tablets work
2) who is using what with their HDX
Many thanks in advance.

Nocker65,
There are several options:
Internet Tablet-- eg Nokia 810
Tablet PC
Notebook PC
Internet tablet works fine, Dave Dever uses this to control his NS01.
Drawback-- samll screen size
Tablet PC-- works fine, good screen size.
Drawback--expensive
Notebook PC- good screen size, limited memory for other applications, not expensive.
I use a tablet pc that we didn't need at work anymore. If I was looking today I'd get a notebook pc. Many options and can be had for the same price or less than the Nokia Internet Tablet.
You need a LAN connection either direct or wireless to the notebook pc. In my case the tablet base is direct ethernet connected to my LAN. I then use the tablet wirelessly from my listening position.
Alot of people seem to like Asus notebooks and there are many options depending upon what you want to do with the computer ie. storage, battery life etc... and I've seen prices from $275-$550.
Just make sure adobe flash is on the notebook abd put on your Naim DTC and IPUI software. Use any browser that supports flash IE, Safari, Mozilla, and away you go. To access the IPUI from the browser use you web address for 192 etc....

If you can wait just a little bit longer, the Apple 'netbook' should be with us around the 3rd quarter, finally.....Rumours of it being touch-screen as well.

Oh that old chestnut.

Nocker65,
I forgot some of these computers are called "netbooks" and some are "notebooks" and can often be found searching either or. The manufacturers website may call it a notebook, but retailers may refer to it as a netbook.
Netbook- really just meaning smaller size, portable, lightweight, etc...
Just looked on Amazon- I'm amazed what you can get fro $275- under $400

Well, it seems orders have been placed for 10" screens at Wintek in Taiwan, the current iPhone screen manufacturer....So, I guess we'll see.....

Remember that a "tablet" like the Nokia 810 can run the Web-based browser interface, but you need at least a "notebook" that runs Windows to use the Desktop Client Application. In my experience, sooner or later you will need the DCA.

Thanks Gary & aht.
Will it be simple to set up the Nokia, been on net and like the look of it?

as aht said you I do not think you can run the Desk Top Client on a Nokia, only the IPUI.
I find the DTC very important since there are tings which cannot be done in the IPUI which I do in the DTC. Make sure you can use both.

I have done a few installs with the Nokia. It has one issue in that if it disconnected from the power it will disconnect from the wirelss connection when the screen saver is activated. You can not disable the screen saver. The Sony MyLo does not do this, is a similar price and works in a similar fashion. I use a nokia and it is great. That one aspect of its performance is frustrating though. I believe an iTouch app is nearly finished. This would require to be purchased I believe and is for Netstreams systems. It may allow connection to the Naimnet server interface though. I can not say this is a definite as I have yet to try it.

We have tested the ARCHOS 5, works well in a NaimNet setup, but not with a local HDX (or NSx). It has something to do with Flash. We will try to find a way to upgrade the version.
It works well with any WiFi PDA runing Windows Mobile, the problem with these units is the screen resolution and size.

We have purchased the Archos 7 and it is no better than Manu's Archos 5 - works well in a NaimNet/Netstreams interface but will not load the HDX or NS0X interface correctly...despite its Flash enabled Opera web browser...?
It does not time out with its connection like the Nokia N800/810 but there are a few other annoyances that we can live with but still not the ideal product (if there is one of course !)

One other thing. Dave Dever told me recently that Naim is working on a Flash-based version of the Desktop Client. So, eventually you may not need Windows. This is good news not only for tablet users, but also for Mac users.

Sorry, you may have misunderstood me - this is something we've asked for, but no firm timetable has been given - just to clarify.

Okay, must be my misunderstanding. Sure would be nice, though...

Well, the crystal ball back in March seems to be about on track...
Reports spilling out of Apple's touch-screen 'netbook' to be out around October time...9" screen...
Should fit the job perfect !

I really think if you want a laptop get one. If you don't want that distraction don't kid yourself you will only use one to control a HDX.

I'd personally go with the netbook pc. Lighter, smaller, more portable than a laptop, but a nice screen size and now with pretty good extended battery life for wireless usage.

I'm hoping the rumored Apple netbook will be out soon. I bought a Nokia N810, and while it does work, it's next to impossible to read the small print on the screen.

Coming soon ...
Along with the rumored Apple touch screen netbook type devices, Asus showcased 9 and 10" versions of their Eee PC with touch screens at CES and some other shows. Where as Apple even deny they are thinking of making anything like this.
