n-Vi: fix for optical input problems

Posted by: GreenAlex on 25 October 2010

Hi,
I was playing around with the n-Vi and I hooked up my DVD5 to the optical input.

I used a 10m Toslink cable and the music just wasn't right. Sounded like lots of drop-outs and sync/timing-problems.

I thought maybe the DVD5's light output was too weak for the n-Vi to be able to process it (tv+10m toslink+av2 -> no problem).

I then tried to hook up an analog to digital converter which converts the analogue signal from my computer to an optical one and thereby removing the electrical connection between the two.
But I heard a weird beeping sound both when no music was playing and when a signal was present.

Thought maybe it was a software bug as I am waiting for the update from my -13 firmware version.

Decided to roam the forum for info on the firmware fixes and found a post by AV@Naim explaining how to access the service menu.

Curious as I am I accessed it and found PCM frequency adjustments and found that of the three digital inputs, only the TOSlink was set to a fixed frequency, 48kHz.
I thought that was weird as 48kHz isn't really what my computer nor the DVD5 would output. So I set it to auto and suddenly all my problems are gone Smile

So, just in case someone else is having those problems, just press and hold the "input" button while on disc mode (no disc in drawer) and access the PCM Frequency menu.

@AV@Naim:
What are all the other settings for? Anything worth pimp-ing? Smile

Alex,

the reason this feature is there is to accomodate equipment with a poor digital output that might have fluctuating frequency. The automatic lock can sometimes have difficulty with such poor digital outputs often found on digital set-top boxes etc.. and so you can set it to a specific o/s frequency to avoid it "hunting".

Ah, thanks for clearing that up Smile

The first time I set it to auto it did fail to lock to the signal and I had to switch inputs. But worked ever since.

Not having it set to auto by default did have me worried at first because I thought the n-Vi was broken when the sound was messed up and would have to go back (I had that kind of luck last week!).

And I probably would have sent it back had I not by chance found the service-menu thread hidden in the depths of this forum Winker

Looking forward to updating it this week *fingers crossed*
