112 AV input

I have the 112 and I have problems synchronizing it to my Marantz Receiver. Sometimes, it synchs, and sometimes it doesn't. When it synchs, I can control the 112 volume dial from my AV Receiver, when it doesn't, there is no sound coming from my mains (which are connected to my Naim amp)
The 112 is connected to the pre outs (front L and R) of my Marantz AV Receiver.
I find that if I turn the 112 vol all the way up to the max, it will synch with the receiver. When it is only at the 12 o'clock position, the synchronization is 50%, sometimes it synchs.
I would really want to avoid turning the 112 vol dial all the way up, what if I accidentally switch input source ? and I'll blast my speakers to smitherens.
Anyone has any ideas how the synchronization works ?
like first turn 112 volume dial all the way to the max, then turn on AV receiver? is that how it is supposed to work ? I also tried turning the vol down all the way to the min, and that never worked.
can someone explain how the synchronization works with the AV input ? do I do further adjustments on the 112 vol dial after it synchronized ? I find that this causes me to lose synchronization, not sure why.
