super bowl 42 (?)

anybody over there give a rat's a** about it? american press indicates it's a "big deal" event in england, but i suspect it's more of a fringe thing ... personally, i'm a serious (american) football fan, and dread super bowl parties - a lot like drinking on new year's eve, why bother.

I am in Canada and am really looking forward to it. The Giants last game was truly excellent. I'll be watching it with friends.
Game may well be decided by Scotsman Lawrence Tynes.
Go Giants!

The Giants last game was awful - from a Packers fans perspective, anyway!!!
Hope they can beat the Pat's, can't see it happening tho.

I live in the UK and have been a fanatical fan of the NFL for over 20 years, a Broncos fan (highs and lows).
Definitely supporting the Patriots, it would be great to have seen the 'greatest team ever'. I also loathe 'The Dolphins' and would love to see them toppled from their 1972 unbeaten crown.
That said I do like the Giants and would not begrudge them if they won.
The time outs are not just for TV by the way, US football is an extremely tactical game, and the stoppages are there to evaluate and plan tactics.
I once impressed an American boss in an interview many years ago when I described US football as 'chess with violence', but I do also like an English comment made that it is 'a game of rugby between two teams of motor cycle couriers'.
Should be one of the best Superbowls.
Jamie
PS. I love cricket, but find football (what the Americans call soccer) boring, I did support Russia in that game for a few minutes a couple of months ago, then Serbia - I think - did the job a few days later).

Now that the Packers are out, I am just hoping for a good game with at least 49 points scored so I can win my football pool and $140.
Then all I will need is to save around $700 more and I could buy a new Naim powercord!

There was a nice line in Buffy the Vampire Slayer a couple of years ago where Giles said "I've never understood why a nation that prides itself on its virility feels the need to don 40 pounds of protective clothing to play rugby."

It should read "World's" championship. It goes back to when a newspaper "The World" sponsored sport, hence "The World's" Championship.

No, the West Country.

I see it's the Grid-Iron Football (a bit like Aussie Rules?), don't see much of that here. I think it is because it doesn't kick off until after midnight so it is a bit late - if they played it earlier in the day I'd have had a look at it.
Who is playing in it?

We just assume we're the baddest asses on the planet.

They have the "world series" in baseball so it only makes that they have the "world championship" of football as well...

I've followed the NFL since Chan 4 started showing it around 85' ...always followed the Cowboys which I guess is rather like unattached footy fans in England saying they've always loved Man U! Daft as it's sounds I've become embroiled with Dallas's high and lows ever since (despite never having been anywhere near the USA in me life!)
This season I was all set for the mother of all Superbowl Parties as Dallas swept all before them ..only to collapse in the final few weeks of the season - losing to the Giants in the playoffs ...DOH! (the REAL Superbowl shoulda been Pats V Cowboys)
..Tonight? ...The Pats to win by a cricket score!
Next season Tony Romo to be the Superbowl MVP
